    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a binder formulation based on an aqueous polymer dispersion which assures uniform film formation without addition of a coalescing agent and forms a coating film of low adhesion and high blocking resistance. SOLUTION: The binder formulation has a minimum film-forming temperature of 10 deg.C or less, contains at least one anionic emulsifying agent and at least one nonionic emulsifying agent, and further contains at least one binder polymer in the form of an aqueous dispersion, the binder polymer comprising monomers of A1, A2, A3, B, C, D and E, where the monomer A1 is a vinyl aromatic monomer, A2 is a 1-4C methacrylate, A3 is acrylnitrile or methacrylonitrile, the monomer B is one kind selected from 1-18C alkyl acrylate and 5-18C alkyl methacrylates, C is methacrylic acid, D is one kind selected from 3-6C monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic amides and 1-4C hydroxyalkyl esters and E is ethylene glycole diacrylate, or the like.

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing an aqueous polymer dispersion. An aqueous dispersion of a polymer that contains at least one chemically bound, incorporated monomer containing at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, is prepared in a manner known per se, so that the aqueous polymer dispersion contains in total more than 0 but less than or 1 % by weight of free, i.e. non chemically bound monomers having an ethylenically unsaturated double bond, in relation to the polymer content of the aqueous polymer dispersion. This residual monomer content is then reduced with a radical redox initiator system containing at least one oxidising agent and at least one reducing agent. The redox initiator system contains as reducing agent a reducing agent that is present in an aqueous solution in at least two mutually balanced tautomer forms, for example the aminoiminomethanosulfinic acid and/or its salts.

    Abstract: The process for drying aqueous dispersions of a polymer (B), in which the dispersion contains, as auxiliary drying agent, at least one polymer (A) containing (in polymerised form) 80-100 wt.% monomer(s) (a) of formula CH2CR1C(O)XCR2R3-R4-SOH (I) or salts thereof and 0-20 wt.% other radically polymerisable monomer(s) (b), in which R1-3 = H or 1-3 C alkyl; R4 = 1-5 C alkylene; and X = O or NH. Also claimed are: (i) the polymer powder containing (A) and (B); (ii) the mineral binder containing such polymer powder(s); (iii) the synthetic resin-plaster drying preparation containing such powder(s); (iv) the aqueous polymer dispersions of (B) with an emulsifier content of not more than 2 wt.%, containing (A) with a Mw of 5000-35,000 as added dispersant; (v) the process for the radical aqueous emulsion polymerisation of ethylenic monomers, in which (A) with a Mw of 5000-35000 is added before, during or after polymerisation; and (vi) the polymer powder obtained by drying as above.

Low emission, solvent-free coating materials containing at least one of these binders are also claimed.
