Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polyurethane foam having excellent mechanical property, produceable using an ordinary starting material in urethane chemistry and having light stability. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the polyurethane foam by reacting an isocyanate with a compound having at least two hydrogen atoms capable of reacting to an isocyanate group, a (cyclic) aliphatic isocyanate is used as the isocyanate and the reaction is performed in the presence of a substance capable of forming a frame structure in the polyurethane foam.

Abstract: Production of functionalized polyurethane foams comprises: (a) reacting an isocyanate with a compound having at least two isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms and a compound (I) having at least one hydroxy, amino and/or thiol group and at least one group R selected from halogen, carbonyl, ester, anhydride, epoxy, carboxy and sulfone groups; and (b) applying an R-reactive compound (II) to the resulting polyurethane foam so that (II) is covalently bound to (I) through R. An independent claim is also included for polyurethane foams produced by the above method.

Abstract: In a filtration process to separate solid, fluid or dissolved substances from a fluid, the substance is passed through one or more compressible filters. The filter can be especially subjected to a variable pressure by means of which the pore size is adapted in accordance with the substance to be separated and enhancing process efficacy The compressible filter material is polyurethane foam. Alternatively the filter material is made up of flakes from 0.1-50 mm preferably 5-15 mm in diameter. The fluid passes two or more times through the same filter or two filters arranged in series, and under increasing pressure. Also claimed is a suitable filter assembly (10) with a housing (12) with an inlet and outlet and a filter insert (44) which can be compressed or de-compressed with a suitable bellows assembly (18). One end of the bellows is fixed, and the other can move within the housing. Movement is effected by a piston (16) in a cylinder (14) in response to turbidity sensor (100) signals.
