    Abstract: The prepn. of aliphatic hydroxy carbonyl cpds. (I), which have been etherified with aliphatic gps., by catalytic oxidation of the corresp. etherified hydroxyalcohols (II) in the presence of metal catalysts comprises oxidising (II) at 450-700 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst with total layer thickness 5-100 mm. The catalyst comprises (a) 3 or more layers of silver crystals, in which one part of the silver crystal layer contains 30-85 wt.% of the catalyst with particles of size 1-2.5 mm., one part contains 2-30 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.75-1 mm., and the rest of the silver crystal layers contain 8-50 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm., together with one or more layers of copper crystals, contg. 1-40 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm.; or (b) silver crystal layers as above, together with one or more layers of copper crystals contg. 0.5-40 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-75 mm. and one or more layers of catalyst particles with 70-99 wt.% Cu, 0.9-20 wt.% tin and 0.1-10 wt.% P, (based on the wt. of the particles of these elements) so that the layers of catalyst particles contain 0.5-10 wt.% catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm. or (c) only silver crystal layers as in (a), except that the part of the layers with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm. contain 13.68 wt.% of the catalyst. (I) are starting materials in the prepn. of dyestuffs, pesticides, plastics and perfumes. (I) are obtd. in better yield, space-time yield and purity than in previous processes, and the life of the catalyst is longer (30 days, in the case of methoxyacetaldehyde).

    Abstract: A further embodiment of the process for the preparation of aqueous solutions of products of the condensation of formaldehyde and at least urea, melamine and phenol, in which the molar proportion of phenol, based on the sum of melamine and urea, is from 0.05 to 0.25, and the molar ratio between urea and melamine is from 0.2:1 to 1:0.2, at a total molar ratio between formaldehyde and the sum of melamine, urea and phenol of from about 1.1 to 2, the condensation products being usable as adhesive resins, in which, in each case in a manner known per se, phenol, formaldehyde and up to 0.35 mol of an alkali metal bisulphite per mol of phenol are reacted to form a phenol-formaldehyde condensate, and formaldehyde and urea are reacted in a molar ratio of 2.5 or less to form a urea-formaldehyde condensate, and the reaction products are themselves reacted with melamine and formaldehyde in such a ratio that the molar ratios between melamine, urea, phenol and formaldehyde mentioned at the outset are either produced directly or after a further reaction with up to 75% of the total intended amount of urea, in accordance with Patent Application P 3125874.3, characterised in that an effective amount of phenol of less than 0.05, based on the sum of melamine and urea, is proposed.
