Abstract: In prepn. of 1,3-dihydroxyacetone esters of formula R1O-ch2-CO-CH2-OR2 (I), 2-methlene-1,3-propanediol esters R1O-CH2-C(=CH2)-CH2-O-COR2 (II) are reacted with ozone and the reaction mixt. formed is reacted with a reducing agent. In formulae (I) and (II), R1 is H or the residue -CO-R3; and R2 and R3 are each H or a (cyclo)aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic residue. (I) and the dihydroxyacetone into which they can be converted by their basic hydrolysis are useful as intermediates for dyes, pharmaceuticals, plant-protection agents and cosmetics. Dihydroxyacetone is useful as a mild reducing agent for vat dyeing and as an artificial skin-browning agent in cosmetics. The process is simpler and more economical than known chemical methods for the prodn. of dihydroxyacetone (esters).

Abstract: A process for the preparation of the sought-after scent 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one, and novel intermediates for the preparation of this compound. 2,5-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one is prepared by first epoxidizing hex-3-ene-2,5-diol in the liquid phase with hydrogen peroxide to give the novel compound 3,4-epoxy-hexane-2,5-diol, which at 40 DEG -280 DEG C. is converted, by means of a catalytic amount of an acid, to the novel compound 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-dihydroxy-tetrahydro-furan. The latter is dehydrogenated by means of oxygen over a silver catalyst or copper catalyst to give the nove compound 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-tetrahydrofuran-3-one, which is oxidized by means of bismuth oxide, in concentrated acetic acid solution, to give the desired compound 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one.

Abstract: The prepn. of aliphatic hydroxy carbonyl cpds. (I), which have been etherified with aliphatic gps., by catalytic oxidation of the corresp. etherified hydroxyalcohols (II) in the presence of metal catalysts comprises oxidising (II) at 450-700 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst with total layer thickness 5-100 mm. The catalyst comprises (a) 3 or more layers of silver crystals, in which one part of the silver crystal layer contains 30-85 wt.% of the catalyst with particles of size 1-2.5 mm., one part contains 2-30 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.75-1 mm., and the rest of the silver crystal layers contain 8-50 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm., together with one or more layers of copper crystals, contg. 1-40 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm.; or (b) silver crystal layers as above, together with one or more layers of copper crystals contg. 0.5-40 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-75 mm. and one or more layers of catalyst particles with 70-99 wt.% Cu, 0.9-20 wt.% tin and 0.1-10 wt.% P, (based on the wt. of the particles of these elements) so that the layers of catalyst particles contain 0.5-10 wt.% catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm. or (c) only silver crystal layers as in (a), except that the part of the layers with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm. contain 13.68 wt.% of the catalyst. (I) are starting materials in the prepn. of dyestuffs, pesticides, plastics and perfumes. (I) are obtd. in better yield, space-time yield and purity than in previous processes, and the life of the catalyst is longer (30 days, in the case of methoxyacetaldehyde).

This bed has >=3 layers of Ag crystals: (a) a layer of particle size 1-2.5 mm (30-85 wt.% of the catalyst); (b) a layer of 0.75-1 mm (2-30 wt.%); and (c) a layer of 0.2-0.75 mm (8-50 wt.%); and >=1 layer of Cu crystals of particle size 0.2-0.75 mm making up 1-40 wt.% of the catalyst. Opt. there is also >=1 layer of particles of size 0.2-0.75 mm comprising 70-99 wt.% Cu, 0.9-20 wt.% Sn and 0.1-10 wt.% P, making up 0.5-10 wt.% of the catalyst.

Abstract: Alcohols are prepd. by hydrogenating water-soluble olefin oxides in aq. soln. at an Ni catalyst, under increased H2 pressure and temp. In a pref. process, 1,2,4-butane-triol is prepd. by hydrogenating 1,4-butanediol oxide. Hydrogenation of water-soluble olefin oxides in aq. soln. proceeds as well as in an anhydrous solvent. Epoxide concn. is esp. 10-50 wt.%. Hydrogenation conditions are 200-300 bar, at 20-200 (50-150) esp. 100 degrees C. The epoxides may contain 2-30C and opt. solubilising gps. Catalyst may be Raney Ni, reduced Ni silicates and supported Ni. Catalyst concn. in suspension is opt. 2-20 (5-15) wt. %.
