Abstract: Formaldehyde evolution from aminoplast foams is reduced by treating the finished foam surface with a non-volatile HCHO-bonding agent (I). (I) is pref. an aq. urea soln. or a salt of a S acid esp. an aq. mixt. of urea, NH3, ammonium sulphite and a water contg. or drawing agent. In an example, a urea-HCHO soln. prepd. from urea-HCHO resin soln. urea and water, was beaten with Na dibutylnaphthalene sulphonate, resorcinol, phosphoric acid and water were beaten into to form a foam which was moulded into test pieces.

Abstract: The prepn. of aliphatic hydroxy carbonyl cpds. (I), which have been etherified with aliphatic gps., by catalytic oxidation of the corresp. etherified hydroxyalcohols (II) in the presence of metal catalysts comprises oxidising (II) at 450-700 degrees C in the presence of a catalyst with total layer thickness 5-100 mm. The catalyst comprises (a) 3 or more layers of silver crystals, in which one part of the silver crystal layer contains 30-85 wt.% of the catalyst with particles of size 1-2.5 mm., one part contains 2-30 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.75-1 mm., and the rest of the silver crystal layers contain 8-50 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm., together with one or more layers of copper crystals, contg. 1-40 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm.; or (b) silver crystal layers as above, together with one or more layers of copper crystals contg. 0.5-40 wt.% of the catalyst with particle size 0.2-75 mm. and one or more layers of catalyst particles with 70-99 wt.% Cu, 0.9-20 wt.% tin and 0.1-10 wt.% P, (based on the wt. of the particles of these elements) so that the layers of catalyst particles contain 0.5-10 wt.% catalyst with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm. or (c) only silver crystal layers as in (a), except that the part of the layers with particle size 0.2-0.75 mm. contain 13.68 wt.% of the catalyst. (I) are starting materials in the prepn. of dyestuffs, pesticides, plastics and perfumes. (I) are obtd. in better yield, space-time yield and purity than in previous processes, and the life of the catalyst is longer (30 days, in the case of methoxyacetaldehyde).

Opt. there is also >=1 layer of particles of size 0.2-0.75 mm comprising 70-99 wt.% Cu, 0.9-20 wt.% Sn and 0.1-10 wt.% P, making up 0.5-10 wt.% of the catalyst.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of the sought-after scent 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one, and novel intermediates for the preparation of this compound. 2,5-Dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one is prepared by first epoxidizing hex-3-ene-2,5-diol in the liquid phase with hydrogen peroxide to give the novel compound 3,4-epoxy-hexane-2,5-diol, which at 40 DEG -280 DEG C. is converted, by means of a catalytic amount of an acid, to the novel compound 2,5-dimethyl-3,4-dihydroxy-tetrahydro-furan. The latter is dehydrogenated by means of oxygen over a silver catalyst or copper catalyst to give the nove compound 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-tetrahydrofuran-3-one, which is oxidized by means of bismuth oxide, in concentrated acetic acid solution, to give the desired compound 2,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-2,3-dihydrofuran-3-one.

Abstract: Formaldehyde is prepd. by the oxidn. of MeOH in an MeOH air mixture in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst at 280-420 degrees C, (320-370) degrees C. MeOH or an MeOH-water mixture, in liq. form, is finely divided at 20-150 degrees C/3-20 bars press. into droplets 1-1000, (1-200) mu m in dia. The droplets are then (partially) vaporised in air at 140-350 degrees C/1.2-2 bars pressure and the resulting mixt. of air and MeOH or air, MeOH and water reacted as above. HCHO is obtd. in improved yields, vol-time yields and purity. Only small amts. of impurities, e.g. HCOOH, or unreacted MeOH are obtained. The catalyst exhibits longer life, esp. at high throughputs.
