Abstract: Working up recycled formamide (I) in the mfr. of HCN from (I) by the vacuum process, using excess (I), involves passing the ammoniacal soln. of water of reaction in (I) sepd. from the reaction gases, directly after leaving the reaction furnace, downwards into a steam stripping column, in countercurrent to 5-20 wt.% steam, so that practically all the NH3 and most of the water are removed. The formation of HCN polymers in (I) is largely avoided. The process is carried out at reduced pressure.
