Abstract: A vinyl chloride emulsion polymer (I) esp. for film prepd. according to the Luvitherm process contains 0.5-5 wt. % graft copolymer (II) as processing aid. (II) comprises (a) 30-80 wt.% elastomeric polymer as the backbone with a Tg 0 degrees C and contains >=15 wt.% (w.r.t. the elastomeric backbone) conjugated diene and (b) 70-20 wt.% 1-4C alkyl methacrylate and/or monovinyl aromatic cpd. and opt. other comonomers. The PVC may be processed more rapidly into a film. The films have good gloss and smoothness and may be used as adhesive or magnetic recording tapes.

Abstract: A thermoplastic moulding compsn. comprises an impact resistant styrene polymer (I) contg. a matrix with a wt. ave. mol. wt. (GPC) of greater than 270000 and a mol.wt. distribution of 3 or less and a polyphenylene ether (II). The compsn. comprises 5-90 pref. 20-80 wt.% (I) and 95-10 pref. 80-20 wt.% (II). (I) are prepd. by polymerisation of monovinyl aromatic monomers in the presence of a rubber. The amt. of rubber in (I) is 2-20 pref. 5-15 wt.%. (II) is esp. poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)ether (IIA). The mouldings have low shrinkage and high impact resistance.

Abstract: Prepn. of (cellular) polyurethanes is claimed from a mixt. of a) >=1 polyisocyanate, B) >=1 polyhydroxy cpd. of mol. wt. 500-7,000 chosen from polyether- and polyesterpolyols and opt. D) other conventional additives, the novelty being that a polymer (C) is included in the mixt.; C) is an alkoxylated polymer prepd. by reacting 0.1-120 mol. ethylene oxide per mol. of gp. capable of being alkoxylated in (C). Polymers contg. covalently bonded polyhydroxy cpds. are easily obtd. cf. prior art in which either (a) polyhydroxy cpd. and polyisocyanates were reacted or (b) in situ free radical graft polymers contg. polyether-polyols grafted over C-C bonds were used. The polyurethanes have better load capacity, tensile, strength, compression set, and tear strength. Foams with low temp. flexibility may be prepd. with proper choice of (C). As flexible or rigid foams, elastomers or coatings. The foams may be used for upholstery, shoe soles, crash pads, etc.

Polymers contg. covalently bonded polyhydroxy cpds., useful in polyurethane chemistry are easily obtd. cf. prior art where either a) polyhydroxy cpds. and polyisocyanates were reacted or b) in situ free radical graft polymers contg. polyetherpolyols grafted over C-C bonds were used. Physical props. e.g., load capacity and low temp. flexibility are also improved. As flexible or rigid, foams, elastomers or coatings. The foams may be used as shoe soles, or in the automobile industry.

Abstract: A thermoplastic molding material based on a styrene polymer which has been made impact-resistant, and on a polyphenylene ether, wherein the impact-resistant styrene polymer comprises a soft component which has a mean particle diameter of greater than 0.3 mu m and contains an acrylic ester polymer as the elastomeric component. The novel molding materials possess improved flow and give moldings having improved aging resistance.
