    Abstract: A counterflow column (C) for reducing the level of volatile matter in dispersions has 5-50 vertical and/or transverse flow filter bases with a free aperture area of 2-25% in the vertical type and 1-10% in the transverse type. The mean aperture hole diameter is 10-50 mm in the vertical type and 2-10 mm in the transverse type. Also claimed are: (a) a complete plant for production of polymer dispersions comprising a reactor (A), a post reactor (B), the claimed counterflow column (C), a heat exchanger (D), a relaxation chamber (E), filter (F) and conditioning unit (G); (b) a process for production of dispersions with a low volatile content in which the dispersion is treated with steam in a counterflow column (C) of either type, the steam passing through the column in the opposite direction to the dispersion at 0.1-0.7 bar pressure; (c) a complete process for polymer dispersion production to achieve low volatile content involving polymerisation, post reaction, treating the dispersion with steam as claimed, extracting steam from the column (C) and depressurising the resulting dispersion, filtering and conversion into products; (d) a claimed polymer dispersion produced by the process which has a volatile content of \} 100 ppm.
