Abstract: In the prodn. of crosslinked polycarboxylic acids (I) by free radical pptn. polymerisation of mixts. of 99.9-90 (wt.)% monoolefinically unsatd. polymerisable carboxylic acids and 0.1-10% di- or poly-olefinically unsatd. comonomers in aromatic hydrocarbons (II), homopolyvinylpyrrolidone (III) with a water content of max. 1% is used as protective colloid. (I) are very effective as thickeners in aq. systems and the mixts. can be pumped, since the viscosity is not too high, even at high (I) concns. In aq. or alcoholic-aq. alkaline medium, (I) form clear, almost structureless gels, which can be used as thickeners in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, paper, textile, adhesive and dispersion paint fields.
