Abstract: Glycerol aminocarboxylates of the formula (I) where n is from 0 to 10 and R is where L is iminodiacetate, aspartate, glutamate, sarcosinate, glycinate, serinate, hydroxyaspartate, ethanolaminoacetate, diethanolamino, alanate or taurinate and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium, are prepared by esterifying glycerol or polyglycerols which contain up to 10 glycerol units with maleic anhydride or itaconic anhydride and addition of compound L-H where L is as defined above to the double bonds of the esters, and are used as complexing agents.

Abstract: New slightly crosslinked, water-soluble polymaleic acid (I) is obtd. by: (a) polymerising maleic anhydride (II) with 0.1-10 (wt.)% crosslinker (III) contg. at least 2 ethylenically unsatd. double bonds in an aromatic hydrocarbon (IV) at 60-200 deg.C in the presence of 1-20 wt.%, w.r.t. (II), of a peroxy-ester (V) derived from satd. or ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acids; and (b) hydrolysing the polymer contg. anhydride gps. to (I) with a Fikentscher K value of 7-20 (measured at 25 deg.C in aq. soln. at pH 7 as Na salt and a (I) concn. of 5%). (I) is pref. prepd. as described above, pref. using 0.2-5% (III) and 5-16% (V) w.r.t. (II). (III) is pref. a di(meth)acrylate of a satd. di- or poly-ol; a polyethylene or polypropylene glycol di(meth)acrylate with mol.wt. 200-9000; a vinyl ester of an ethylenically unsatd. 3-6C carboxylic acid; a vinyl ester of a satd. di- or poly-carboxylic acid; a di- or poly-vinyl ether of a di- or poly-ol; an allyl ester of an ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid; an allyl ether of polyols; methylenebis(meth)acrylamide; divinylethyleneurea; divinylpropyleneurea; DVB; and/or divinyldioxane; esp. a 2-6C alkylene di(meth)acrylate; or a polyethylene and/or polypropylene di(meth)acrylate with mol.wt. 400-2000. (IV) is benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, diethylbenzene, isopropylbenzene and/or diisopropylbenzene. R1, R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl. Pref. the copolymer may contain (c) 0-20% of other copolymerisable mono-ethylenically unsatd. monomers, and esp. contains (a) 95-70 wt.% of (meth)acrylic acid and/or maleic acid, and (b) 5-30% of N-vinylformamide, in which 1-100% of the N-vinyl-formamide units may have been converted to vinylamine units.
