    Abstract: 1. A process for preparing an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with a hydroxyl-containing organic compound, which comprises esterifying a saturated polyester which contains no fewer than 2 free hydroxyl groups per molecule and may contain ether groups or a saturated polyether which contains no fewer than 2 free hydroxyl groups per molecule, this polyester or polyether having an average molecular weight ~Mn of from 400 to 4,000, with from 100 to 150 mol %, based on the OH groups of the polyester or polyether, of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in the presence of an acidic esterification catalyst and one or more hydrocarbons forming an azeotropic mixture with water and a small amount of a polymerization inhibitor at elevated temperature with azeotropic removal of the resulting water, after the esterification removing the hydrocarbon by distillation and after neutralization of the esterification catalyst reacting the remaining acrylic or methacrylic acid with an amount, equivalent to the acid number, of an epoxy compound having no fewer than two epoxy groups per molecule until an acid number =

[Also in Divisions B1-B2 and C3] A screw extruder comprises a barrel 8 and a screw 7 rotatable in the barrel, the screw 7 comprising a series of alternating threaded and unthreaded sections in zones 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, the distance between the section in zone 1b and the barrel being from 1¢-4 times the distance between the section in zone 2b and the barrel, and the diameter of the section in zone 3b being less than that of the section in zone 2b. The barrel may be provided with heating and cooling zones (not shown) and a degassing zone 5. The screw may be provided with threaded sections in zones 4, 6 before andafter the threaded section in the degassing zone. An extruder head 10 including a die is located at the end of the barrel. Material to be degraded, e.g. high M.W. polyisobutylene, is fed into the barrel from hopper 9. The profile of the unthreaded section in zone 1b may be frusto-conical as shown or cylindrical.

    Abstract: Semi-permeable membranes which can be used at low pressures and are useful for press. filtration by reverse osmosis, esp. for de-salting sea-water and purifying waste waters, also for separation of heat-sensitive materials from solns. osmotic measurements, controlled polymer separation from solns. and separation of azeotropic mixtures, are prepd. by shaping a mixt. contg. 10-50 wt % of a polymer of isobutylene having >2 (esp. 5-8) limiting viscosity (measured in isooctane at 20 degrees C) and/or of a vinyl ether having >1.5 (esp. 3-5) limiting viscosity (in isooctane at 20 degrees C) and 90-50 wt % inorganic filler having 0.001-0.5 mm av. particle dia esp. Al oxide and/or Al hydroxide, to form a membrane. The polymers can be coated as a soln. contg. suspended filler, on a substrate before evaporating the solvent.
