Abstract: The invention relates to a method for controlling the thickening of aqueous, silicate-containing systems, characterized in that at least one copolymer having an average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 3000 g/mol and not more than 60000 g/mol is added to said aqueous system and that the copolymer is, essentially statistically, made of monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acids, monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and eventually ethylenically unsaturated comonomers. The method is also characterized in that the polymerization is carried out in the presence of 0.01 to 100 mol-%, in relation to the total amount of all COOH groups of the mono- and dicarboxylic acids, of at least one base for producing the copolymer, the indicated amounts in wt.-% each referring to the total amount of all used monomers.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for applying corrosion-resistant layers, especially integrated pretreatment layers or layers for atmospheric corrosion protectio n, to metallic surfaces. In said method, copolymers are used which contain monomers comprising 20 to 70 percent by weight of nitrogen heterocyles, monomers comprising 10 to 50 percent of acidic groups, 10 to 50 percent by weight of vinyl aromatic monomers, and 0 to 25 percent by weight of other optional monomers as monomeric constitutional units. Also disclosed are copolymers having said composition as well as preparations for applying corrosion-resistant layers.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a substantially chromium-free process for passivating metallic surfaces of Zn, Zn alloys, Al or Al alloys by treating the surface with an acidic aqueous formulation which comprises at least one substantially noncrosslinked, water-soluble polymer or copolymer containing at least 50% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid units and comprises water or an aqueous solvent mixture comprising at least 50% by weight of water, and by further treating the surface with at least one water-soluble crosslinker comprising at least 2 crosslinking groups selected from the group consisting of azirane, oxirane, and thiirane groups. The invention further relates to passivating layers obtainable by means of the process and to a formulation suitable for this process.
