    Abstract: 5-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone is prepd from 5-(2-acetoxy) ethyl-2-pyrrolidone (I) by spraying (I) as a liq into a vortex layer at raised temp, spontaneous evaporation, and thermal splitting off of acetic acid. The vortex material is abrasion-resistant and free-flowing, eg a ceramic with narrow range of particle size and vortex point not above 30 cm/sec. The temp is 300-1000 (500-800) deg C, and the vortex gas is inert, eg N2, and is heated to the operating temp in the vortex layer or in a pre-heater, and fed into the reaction zone at 5-100 cm/sec (10-40 cm/sec). ADVANTAGE - Evaporation and reaction are in the same appts, the reactor does not become encrusted or blocked, coking is avoided, temp is uniform in the whole reaction layer, yield is higher, and (I) need not be pure, but may be multi-component mixt, eg an isomeric mixt of 3- or 5-(2-acetoxy), ethyl-2-pyrrolidone and accompanying cpds.
