Abstract: A snow substitute based on any ethylene polymerisate which consists of is not 80 wt.% of ethylene units has a density of 0.91-0.97 g/cm3 pref. 0.915 g/cm3 and is in the form of particles. The main axis of the particles i.e. the straight line through the two most distant points present, has a length of 10-10000 um pref. 100-6000 um, and the secondary axes have a length of is not 5% of the corresponding main axis pref. is not 10%. Particles of ethylene polymer prepared according to the invention can be applied directly to a provide background to produce a cover of "synthetic snow" of the desire thickness. It is also possible to set up the particles in an intimate mix with water-particles/water = 100-10 to 100-100 pts. wt- by e.g. spraying, the outside temperature being over or under 0 degrees C. the particles can be used in a mixture with natural snow or in combination with a brush type artificial snow. It has been shown to be advantageous if the particles are porous, when they are present together with water or snow.

Abstract: The snow substitute is based on plastics materials such as polymerisates of monoolefin type unsatd. hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Polymerisate consists of is not 80 wt.% monomer of molecular wt. 40. The synthetic materials have a wt. average molecular wt. 0.1-106 have a granular particle shape, have particles diameter of 10-3000 um, an apparent density which amounts to 5-60% of the density of the polymer. The particles are porous and have a wt. per unit vol. of 0.7-0.98 g/cm3. Specifically used is a mixture from (1) 70-90 pts. wt. of a polypropylene with 1 wt.% soluble in boiling or room temp. xylol and (2) 10-30 pts.wt. of a polypropylne with >99 wt.% soluble in boiling room temp. xylol. Sum of pts.wt. from (1) and (2) = 100. The polypropylenes in (1) and (2) have approximately similar intrinsic viscosities and mol.wt. distributions. The absolute intrinsic viscosity measured in Dekalin at 130 degrees C is in the range 1-15. Particles prepared according to the invention can be applied directly to a provide background to produce a cover of "synthetic snow of the desired thickness. It is generally an advantage to set up the synthetic particles in an intimate mix with water - particles water = 100-10 to 100-100 pts. wt. by e.g. spraying, the outside temperature being over or under 0 degrees C. The particles can be used in a mixture with natura snow or in combination with a brush type artificial snow.

Abstract: Packing strips are produced from polypropylene compsns. contg. 0.5-8 (1-4) wt. % (based on polypropylene) of a finely divided, uniformly distributed bituminous coal having particle size 5-150 (10-90) mu, by a process involving extrusion of polypropylene compsn. at 170-320 degrees C. to form primary strips, having cross-sectional area 0.5-20 (1-10)mm2 and ratio thickness: width 1:5 to 1:80, (1:10 to 1:40) and drawing longitudinally and monoaxially at surface temp. >60 degrees C. but below crystallite m.pt. of polypropylene component, in ratio 1:4 to 1:12. The polypropylene used has intrinsic viscosity (in decaline at 130 degrees C.) 1-9 dl/g and density (DIN 53 479) 0.8-0.92 g/cc; a proportion of 9 wt.% (at wt. ratio polypropylene: xylene 5:95) is soluble in xylene boiling under normal conditions and then cooled again to room temp.

Abstract: Process comprises mixing the thermoplastics with a foaming agent at a temp. above the softening temp. of the plastics and under pressure such that foaming of the mixt. is prevented; forcing the foamable mixt. into a lower-pressure zone; adjusting the bulk wt. of the foamed material to 10-90% of the sp. wt. of the thermoplastics; cooling the foamed foil to below the softening pt. of the plastics; and hauling off the cooled foil at >= x the rate at which the melt issued from the lip of the extrusion die. A wide range of plastics may be used, e.g. non-crosslinked polythylene, which may be so processed at above its crystallite m. pt. No additional shaping equipment is required. Also suitable for poluypropyklene, PVC, EVA and plystyrene.

PP of which (for a wt. ratio PP/xylene of 5/95) less than 1wt. % in soluble inboiling xylene under normal conditions, the xylene being then cooled again to room temp. and (b) 10-30 pts. wt. PP of which (for a wt. ratio PP/xylene of 5/95) mor than 99 t.% are soluble in boiling xylene under normal conditions, the xylen being then cooled again to room temp, provided that (a) + (b) = 10, the PP's of (a) and (b) have intrinsic viscosities and molecular wt. distributions which are approximately equal (I.V. being 1-10 and measured in decaline at 130 degrees C and mol. wt. distribution by gel permeation chromatography). The process is characterised in that the compsn. contains 0.5-15 wt.% of finely divided coal fo particle size 5-150 um homogeneously distributed therein.
