    Abstract: Polypropylene moulding compsn. is based on a mixt. of 90-99 (wt.)% polypropylene (I) which is 1% soluble on boiling in xylene at a (I)/xylene ratio of 5:95 and cooling to room temp., and 1-10% polypropylene (II), which is >99% soluble under these conditions, (I) and (II) having (approx.) the same intrinsic viscosity and mol. wt. distribution (GPC method) and absolute intrinsic viscosity value in the 1-10 range (in decalin at 130 degrees C). The novelty is that the compsn. also contains 3-30% hydrocarbon resin (II) with a softening point of 90-140 degrees C (ASTM E28/58T) and a bromine no. of under 5 g. Br/100g. (ASTM D1159), homogeneously blended with (I) and (II). The compsn. is useful for making undrawn, uni- or bi-axially oriented and laminated films and other articles, e.g. packaging tapes and injection mouldings. (III) improves the surface gloss.

    Abstract: A snow substitute based on any ethylene polymerisate which consists of is not 80 wt.% of ethylene units has a density of 0.91-0.97 g/cm3 pref. 0.915 g/cm3 and is in the form of particles.     Abstract: The snow substitute is based on plastics materials such as polymerisates of monoolefin type unsatd. hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Polymerisate consists of is not 80 wt.% monomer of molecular wt. 40. The synthetic materials have a wt. average molecular wt. 0.1-106 have a granular particle shape, have particles diameter of 10-3000 um, an apparent density which amounts to 5-60% of the density of the polymer. The particles are porous and have a wt. per unit vol. of 0.7-0.98 g/cm3. Specifically used is a mixture from (1) 70-90 pts. wt. of a polypropylene with 1 wt.% soluble in boiling or room temp. xylol and (2) 10-30 pts.wt. of a polypropylne with >99 wt.% soluble in boiling room temp. xylol. Sum of pts.wt. from (1) and (2) = 100. The polypropylenes in (1) and (2) have approximately similar intrinsic viscosities and mol.wt. distributions. The absolute intrinsic viscosity measured in Dekalin at 130 degrees C is in the range 1-15. Particles prepared according to the invention can be applied directly to a provide background to produce a cover of "synthetic snow of the desired thickness. It is generally an advantage to set up the synthetic particles in an intimate mix with water - particles water = 100-10 to 100-100 pts. wt. by e.g. spraying, the outside temperature being over or under 0 degrees C. The particles can be used in a mixture with natura snow or in combination with a brush type artificial snow.

    Abstract: A process is claimed for prepg. polypropylene tapes for packaging, comprising extruding a polypropylene (PP) moulding compsn. at 170-320 degrees C to form primary tapes with a cross-section area of 0.5-20 mm2 and thickness/width ratio of 1/5-1/80, and monoaxillay drawing the tapes longitudinally in the ratio 1/4-1/12 with their surface at >60 degrees C but less than the m.pt. of the PP crystallites. The compsn. comprises a mixt. of (a) 70-90 pts. wt. PP of which (for a wt. ratio PP/xylene of 5/95) less than 1wt. % in soluble inboiling xylene under normal conditions, the xylene being then cooled again to room temp. and (b) 10-30 pts. wt. PP of which (for a wt. ratio PP/xylene of 5/95) mor than 99 t.% are soluble in boiling xylene under normal conditions, the xylen being then cooled again to room temp, provided that (a) + (b) = 10, the PP's of (a) and (b) have intrinsic viscosities and molecular wt. distributions which are approximately equal (I.V. being 1-10 and measured in decaline at 130 degrees C and mol. wt. distribution by gel permeation chromatography). The process is characterised in that the compsn. contains 0.5-15 wt.% of finely divided coal fo particle size 5-150 um homogeneously distributed therein.
