    Abstract: A snow substitute based on any ethylene polymerisate which consists of is not 80 wt.% of ethylene units has a density of 0.91-0.97 g/cm3 pref. 0.915 g/cm3 and is in the form of particles. The main axis of the particles i.e. the straight line through the two most distant points present, has a length of 10-10000 um pref. 100-6000 um, and the secondary axes have a length of is not 5% of the corresponding main axis pref. is not 10%. Particles of ethylene polymer prepared according to the invention can be applied directly to a provide background to produce a cover of "synthetic snow" of the desire thickness. It is also possible to set up the particles in an intimate mix with water-particles/water = 100-10 to 100-100 pts. wt- by e.g. spraying, the outside temperature being over or under 0 degrees C. the particles can be used in a mixture with natural snow or in combination with a brush type artificial snow. It has been shown to be advantageous if the particles are porous, when they are present together with water or snow.

    Abstract: The snow substitute is based on plastics materials such as polymerisates of monoolefin type unsatd. hydrocarbons or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Polymerisate consists of is not 80 wt.% monomer of molecular wt. 40. The synthetic materials have a wt. average molecular wt. 0.1-106 have a granular particle shape, have particles diameter of 10-3000 um, an apparent density which amounts to 5-60% of the density of the polymer. The particles are porous and have a wt. per unit vol. of 0.7-0.98 g/cm3. Specifically used is a mixture from (1) 70-90 pts. wt. of a polypropylene with 1 wt.% soluble in boiling or room temp. xylol and (2) 10-30 pts.wt. of a polypropylne with >99 wt.% soluble in boiling room temp. xylol. Sum of pts.wt. from (1) and (2) = 100. The polypropylenes in (1) and (2) have approximately similar intrinsic viscosities and mol.wt. distributions. The absolute intrinsic viscosity measured in Dekalin at 130 degrees C is in the range 1-15. Particles prepared according to the invention can be applied directly to a provide background to produce a cover of "synthetic snow of the desired thickness. It is generally an advantage to set up the synthetic particles in an intimate mix with water - particles water = 100-10 to 100-100 pts. wt. by e.g. spraying, the outside temperature being over or under 0 degrees C. The particles can be used in a mixture with natura snow or in combination with a brush type artificial snow.
