Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce, by a single process, a fibrid that has high quality at low temperatures and is useful for paper, seals, friction brake lining, etc., by introducing a solution of a polyarylene ether in an appropriate solvent into a liquid solidifying medium under specific conditions. SOLUTION: This fibrid is obtained by introducing a solution of a polyarylene ether, such as polyarylene ether sulfone (preferably in concentration of 5-25wt.%) in an organic solvent, such as N-methylpyrrolidone and dimethylformamide, into a liquid solidifying medium while simultaneously giving the solution a shearing force so that a shearing space having an average energy density of 5W.s/cm or more is present during the introduction of the solution into the solidifying medium. In this case, the ratio by volume of the polymer solution to the solidifying medium is preferably in a range of from (1:10) to (1:20).

Abstract: In order to prepare polyarylene ether ketones by Friedel-Crafts polycondensation, a reaction mixture comprising A. a monomer system, B. a Lewis acid, C. optionally a Lewis base and D. an inert solvent is polycondensed in two reaction zones and discharged in plug flow from the second reaction zone and formulated. In this process, the reaction mixture is polycondensed in the first reaction zone with stirring to a viscosity of about 2000 mPa.s, transferred into the second reaction zone and discharged therefrom by means of an inert solvent or by means of an inert gas saturated with the solvent under a pressure of from about 6 to 65 bar, preferably even 10 to 25 bar, where the conveying pressure is reduced in at least two steps and the pressure reduction in the first step is at most 20%.
