Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polymer capable of industrially, simply and inexpensively producing a polyamide and a polyamine by carrying out catalytic reaction of a nitrile-containing polymer. SOLUTION: A nitrile containing polymer (preferably acrylonitrile homopolymer or copolymer) is subjected to catalytic reaction in the presence of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and/or carbon monoxidereleasing compound (preferably formic acid or its derivative). Furthermore, a group I metal or group IV to X metal or metal compound in the periodic table, e.g. iron pentacarbonyl is preferably used as the catalyst and a molar ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide is preferably (4:1) to (0.25:1) and a molar ratio of carbon monoxide to nitrile group is preferably (1:1) to (1,000:1) and a molar ratio of hydrogen to nitrile group is preferably (2:1) to (1,000:1).

SOLUTION: The fine pore flexible foam having an open cell is based on an olefin polymer or a thermoplastic polyester. The foam has an open cell content of 40%, preferably higher than 50%, a density of 300 g/L (liter), preferably in the range of 20-200 g/L, and an average cell diameter of less than 0.1 mm, preferably less than 0.08 mm.

Abstract: The invention concerns water-absorbent cellular crosslinked-polymer materials produced by (I) foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture containing: (a) acid-group-containing monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which have been neutralized to at least 50 mol %; (b) optionally, other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (c) crosslinking agents; (d) initiators; (e) 0.1 to 20 % by wt. of at least one surfactant; (f) optionally, at least one solubilizer and (g) optionally, thickeners, foam stabilizers, polymerization-control agents, fillers and/or cell-nucleation agents, the foaming being carried out by dispersing throughout the mixture fine bubbles of a gas which is inert to radicals, and (II) polymerizing the foamed mixture to form a cellular hydrogel and adjusting the water content of the cellular hydrogel to 1 to 45 % by wt. The invention also concerns methods of producing such polymer materials and their use in personal-hygiene articles used to absorb body fluids and in bandage material used to cover injuries.
