    Abstract: Textile goods containing synthetic fibers are washed and after-treated by a process wherein, as an antiredeposition agent, a copolymer is employed which contains, as copolymerized monomers, (a) from 50 to 90% by weight of one or more vinyl esters of C1-C4 aliphatic carboxylic acids, (b) from 5 to 35% by weight of one or more N-vinyllactams, (c) from 1 to 20% by weight of one or more monomers containing basic groups, or of salts or quaternization products of these monomers, and (d) from 0 to 20% by weight of one or more further monomers which are copolymerizable with monomers (a), (b) and (c) and are free from carboxyl and basic groups, the percentages in each case being based on the sum of the monomers, with the proviso that the percentages sum to 100.

    Abstract: Washing and cleaning compsns. are prepd. contg. copolymers of (a) 35-80 mol. % (meth)acrylic acid and (b) 20-65 mol. % of an acrylic acid hydroxyalkyl ester with 2-4C atoms per OH gp., opt. in the form of their alkali salts. The copolymers may also contain up to 5 mol. % other copolymerisable monomers. The copolymers are useful sequestering agents and substitutes for phosphate builders in washing agents, thus overcoming the eurotrophic effect caused when phosphate-contg. waste waters are released into drains. The copolymers are easy to make, have good solubility in water, have good calcium-binding capacity and good washing effect, and can be used at least partially to replace agents such as Na tripolyphosphate in washing agent compsns.
