Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the residual content of an unsaturated compound after hydrogenation by using a catalyst containing a metal having the hydrogenation activities on an alumina carrier and representing the reflection of a specified X-ray refraction pattern as the catalyst used in the case of hydrogenating selec tively the unsaturated compound in hydrocarbon flows. SOLUTION: When an unsaturated compound in hydrocarbon flows containing the unsaturated compound is selectively hydrogenated by using a catalyst, the catalyst having at least a metal of one kind provided with hydrogenation activities on an alumina carrier and representing the reflection of the X-ray refraction pattern corresponding to the lattice face interval in the state of not being used represented by a separate table is used. As the metal of one kind provided with hydrogenation activities or a plurality of metals provided with hydrogenation activities, one kind or a plurality of kinds of metals selected from group VIII, group IX or group X of the periodical table are used as the metal provided with the hydrogenation activities. As the metal provided with hydrogenation activities, preferably a platinum and/or a palladium is used.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and safely produce the subject compound useful as a production intermediate for a metallocence complex known as a polymerization catalyst in one step by reacting two specific kinds of compounds in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. SOLUTION: The objective substituted indanone of the formula IV or the formula V is produced by reacting a compound of the formula I or the formula II [R , R , R and R are each H, a 1-4C (fluoro)alkyl, a (1-4C alkyl)silyl, phenyl, benzyl or R and R form a benzene ring together with the bonded C atom] with a compound of the formula III [R so a 1-10C alkyl or a (1-4C alkyl- substituted)phenyl; X is Cl, Br or I] in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g. AlCl3 ) in a Friedel-Crafts solvent (e.g. methylene chloride) at -80 to 0 deg.C.
