    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to simply obtain the subject compound useful as a precursor for a polymerization catalyst without using a toxic reactant, by reacting a specific aromatic compound with a specified substituted allyl compound and then dehydrogenating the resultant compound. SOLUTION: (A) A compound represented by formula I [A is a bridge, together with the adjacent carbon, forms an aliphatic aromatic ring which may be condensed with a 6-membered (hetero)aromatic ring or other aromatic rings] is reacted with (B) a compound represented by formula II [R is a 1-10C alkyl or a (1-4C alkyl-substituted)phenyl; X is Cl, Br or I] in the presence of (C) a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as AlCl3 to provide a compound represented by formula III, which is then dehydrogenated to afford a compound represented by formula IV. Furthermore, the reaction is carried out by using the component C in an amount so as to provide (0.1:1) to (1.5:1), advantageously (0.2:1) to (1.0:1) molar ratio of the components C:B.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and safely produce the subject compound useful as a production intermediate for a metallocence complex known as a polymerization catalyst in one step by reacting two specific kinds of compounds in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. SOLUTION: The objective substituted indanone of the formula IV or the formula V is produced by reacting a compound of the formula I or the formula II [R , R , R and R are each H, a 1-4C (fluoro)alkyl, a (1-4C alkyl)silyl, phenyl, benzyl or R and R form a benzene ring together with the bonded C atom] with a compound of the formula III [R so a 1-10C alkyl or a (1-4C alkyl- substituted)phenyl; X is Cl, Br or I] in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g. AlCl3 ) in a Friedel-Crafts solvent (e.g. methylene chloride) at -80 to 0 deg.C.
