Abstract: Quaternary NH4 salts have general formula (where Ris m-valent 3-7 C alkyl; R1 is mono-valent 1-4 C alkyl; R2 is mono-valent 8-22 C alkyl; X- is Cl or Br anion, 1 is 0 to 6, m is 3 to 7, n is 1 to 7 and 1 + n max. = m). Pref. as retarders in dyeing anionic polyacrylonitrile fibres with basic dyes. W.r.t. standard retarders, (I) have higher activity and can be used in smaller quantities to achieve same levelling effect; (ii) fibre-blocking risk is overcome. (I) are pref. pred. by reacting an alcohol having formula R(OH)m (II) with (m-1) mol. epihalohydrin in presence of a Lewis acid and then with at least one tert. fatty amine of formula NR12R2.

Abstract: Dyeing of synthetic fibres and their mixts. with natural fibres, with dispersion or basic dyes in aq. baths contg. 0.1-30 wt%, based on wt. of fibres, of a benzyl ester of formula (in which R is H or 1-10C alkyl; R' is H or CH3; m and n are 0-5; Y is halogen). Smell is less than salicylic or benzoic acid esters. Easily emulsified in the bath and washed out from the textile after dyeing. Do not cause yellowing or affect light fastness. Mixts, of different dyes are uniformly exhausted on the fibres. Y is pref. Cl, and the pref. ester is chlorbenzyl formate, with the Cl in o-, m- or p- posn., or mixt. of these isomers. The dye bath also contains 5-90 wt% non-ionic emulsifier based on wt. of ester, 2.5-20 wt% anionic emulsifier, or pref. a mixt. of both types. Esp. suitable is a mixt. of 80-85 pts. ester, 8-5 pts. anionic emulsifier and 12-10 pts. non-ionic emulsifier.
