Abstract: Aqueous polymer dispersions (I), containing a radical copolymer (CP) with an alkali metal ion content (GA) of not more than 0.5 wt.%, based on (A) 20-65 wt.% vinylaromatic monomer(s), (B) 35-80 wt.% comonomer(s) with two conjugated double bonds and (C) 0-10 wt.% other comonomers with at least one double bond. Also claimed are (i) aqueous polymer preparations containing (I) and finely divided pigment in amounts of up to 60 vol.% (IIA) or 20-45 vol.% (IIB); (ii) substrates coated with a film of (I) or (II), and (iii) a process for the production of (I) by radical- initiated aqueous emulsion polymerisation of the above comonomers, with the addition of ammonia and/or organic amine to increase the pH of the dispersion medium.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing filled papers and filled paper products by adding an aqueous suspension of at least one finely particulate polymer-pigment hybrid to a paper-making stock and dewatering the paper-making stock while forming sheets. The polymer-pigment hybrid is obtained by grinding an aqueous suspension of at least inorganic pigment in the presence of at least one binder and optionally by drying the aqueous suspension so obtained and redispersing the dried polymer-pigment hybrid in water. The invention also relates to the polymer-pigment hybrids so obtained as fillers for producing filled paper or filled paper products.

Abstract: The present invention provides a process for preparing a stable aqueous copolymer dispersion by free-radically initiated aqueous emulsion polymerization of a) from 19.9 to 80 parts by weight of conjugated aliphatic dienes [monomers a)], b) from 19.9 to 80 parts by weight of vinylaromatic compounds [monomers b)], c) from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids and/or dicarboxylic acids [monomers c)], d) from 0 to 20 parts by weight of ethylenically unsaturated carbonitriles [monomers d)], and e) from 0 to 20 parts by weight of copolymerizable compounds other than monomers b) [monomers e)], the total amount of ethylenically unsaturated monomers a) to e) being 100 parts by weight, in the presence of water and from 0.1 to 5 parts by weight, based on the total monomer amount, of emulsifiers comprising f) sulfuric monoesters of ethoxylated fatty acid alcohols and/or g) salts of esters and monoesters of alkylpolyoxyethylenesulfosuccinates, from 15 to 85% by weight of the total emulsifiers used being added within the time taken to reach up to 40% of the total conversion of the monomers a) to e), and from 1 to 50% of the carboxylic acid groups deriving from the monomers c) being neutralized by addition of base.
