Abstract: The purificn. of sulphuric esters (I) of formula R1OSO3Z (in which R1 is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp. and Z is H or an alkali or alkaline earth atom) comprises exposing crude (I) with light of wavelength below 700 nm in the presence of carbonyl cpds. (II) of the formula R2-CO-R3 (in which R2 and R3 independently are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gps. or together with the adjacent CO gp. form an alicyclic ring or fluorenone, naphthoquinone, anthrone, anthraquinone or anthraquinone-sulphonic acid; R2 can also be H). (I) are used as surfactants in a wide range of prods. The treatment provides a simple, economical and rapid way of removing coloured impurities and gives a better space-time yield of pure ester, even in mass prodn.
