Abstract: A process for the prepn. of higher ketones of formula: R'CH2CH2COR2 comprises the reaction of an aldehyde of formula (I): R1-CHO with ketones of formula (II) CH3COR2 at 80-280 degrees C in the presence of hydrogen and a catalytic system, which contains an oxide or salt of a rare earth metal or mixts. of these and one or more Group VIII metals. In the above, R' is 1-20C alkyl, esp. 1-5C), aryl or cycloalkyl opt. substd. by alkyl, or 7-20C (pref. 7-10 C) aralkyl; the above gps. may also be substd. by OH or alkoxyl gps. inert to the reaction conditions; R2 is the same as R'. Typical cpds. are methyl isoamyl ketone used as a solvent and intermediate and 4-phenyl-butan-2-one used in perfumery. As a result of the catalyst which favours both the condensation and hydrogenation steps, the process is more selective, simpler, cheaper and gives higher yields compared with previous processes. Using acetone and methyl propanol, the catalyst is 10% Ni, 10% Co, 10% rare earth oxides (95% Nd2O3) on an alumina support giving a mixture contg. 40.8% starting materials and 34.3% 5-methylhexane-2-one. The pref. reaction temp. is 140-220 degrees C.

The resulting vapour is condensed in a fractionating column, the H2O drawn off at the head of the column and the resulting succinic acid anhydride sepd. from the solvent by d tn. the process gives a frictionless continuous operation with full conversion to a pure prod. at low cost.

Abstract: In exothermic reactions between liq. and gases on catalytically acting fixed bed fillings in tubular reactors, where reaction enthalpy is mostly removed by the gas stream, the bed of catalyst or of material contg. catalyst is interrupted by layers of material with no catalytic effect. The catalytically neutral material may be the catalyst carrier itself, but is pref. Pall rings, Raschig rings or saddle bodies, so dimensioned that catalyst cannot penetrate. A filling with 50cm. layer of Pall rings, each 15 mm long, alternating with 1 metre layers of catalyst kept the temp. of a known reaction below 300 deg.C, whereas over 500 deg.C had been recorded in the uninterrupted catalyst body. Useful for high pressure hydrogenation with gas fed through external coolers, and reduces the incidence of uncontrolled temp. rises which can damage the catalyst.

Abstract: Prepn. of mono- or poly-, symmetrical or asymmetrical tert-amines comprises reacting a prim. or sec. amine R1-NH-R2 (where R1 and R2 are each H, alkyl or cycloalkyl gps., opt. substd. by inert substs. which, in turn, may carry amino gps. -NHR1) with mono- or di-hydric prim. or sec. - alcohols. The reaction is catalysed by a hydrogenation/dehydrogenation catalyst, opt. in the presence of H2, and the amine is fed into the liq. reaction mixt. contg. the mixt. of alcohol required for the reaction and the proportion of water formed in the reaction is eliminated. High yields of tert-amines are obtd. with low amts. of prim- and sec-amine contamination. Since the alcohol reactant is completely consumed the sepn. of alcohol from tert-amine, which is usually difficult and energy-consuming, is avoided.

Abstract: Aldehydes or ketones of not less than 4 or 5 carbon atoms, respectively, are manufactured in a one stage process in the liquid phase by subjecting aldehydes and/or ketones of not less than 2 or 3 carbon atoms, respectively, to an aldol condensation and hydrogenating the resulting olefinically unsaturated aldehyde, the catalyst used for the aldol condensation and hydrogenation containing nickel or cobalt or their mixtures, zinc oxide and at least one of the elements iron, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, gallium, indium, thallium, germanium, tin, lead, cadmium and mercury or compounds of the said elements.
