    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium which is constituted of a sheet-shaped polymer substrate and a metallic contact thin layer formed on a treated main surface of the substrate by a PVD method, having 50 to 1000nm thickness, being ferromagnetic and containing cobalt and which causes no cracking, has no internal stress, is uniform and mechanically stable. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium is constituted of the sheet- shaped polymer substrate at least one main surface of which is pretreated by ion etching and the metallic contact thin layer which is formed on the treated main surface of the substrate by the PVD method, has 50 to 1000nm thickness, is ferromagnetic and contains cobalt. At least the main surfaces of the substrate for the metallic thin layer are denatured in advance by ion etching with a gas containing nitrogen or oxygen.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has improved recording characteristics and is formed with a magnetic layer on a substrate sheet subjected to a plasma treatment. CONSTITUTION: This magnetic recording medium consists of a sheet-like polymer substrate subjected to the plasma treatment on at least one surface of its main surfaces and the ferromagnetic layer of 10 to 1000nm thickness formed on the main surface subjected to the plasma treatment of the substrate. The main surface of the substrate for formation of such ferromagnetic layer is previously treated by at least two kinds of different plasma methods, such as ion beam etching and sputter etching.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a process for producing a magnetic recording medium of a metallic thin layer type which does not exhibit the defect of the loss of the residual induction to be induced at the time of reproduction while the deviation from the desirable magnetic direction of the magnetic recording medium produced by the conventional method brings about such loss and more particularly the magnetic recording medium of the metallic thin film type of which the projection of the desirable magnetic direction with respect to a tape surface is aligned to an average recording direction. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium substantially consisting of a polymer band-like substrate guided on a cylindrical drum and more particularly a roller-shaped cooling drum and the tightly adhesive thin layer of a ferromagnetic material is produced by forming the vapor jet of this ferromagnetic material from an evaporating device 6 to which this material is supplied in a reduced pressure chamber 1 and depositing the vapor jet by evaporation on this substrate. At this time, the vapor jet 7 is brought into collision against the substrate 2 at the angle different from 90 deg.. The revolving shaft of the cylindrical drum 4 for guiding the substrate is inclined with respect to the plane of the evaporating device 6.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To maximize the yield of a magnetic material by using a PVD method by vapor deposition of the magnetic material in an oblique angle direction at the time of forming a thin-film metallic layer on a polymer substrate. CONSTITUTION: The web-like substrate 2 passes over such a drum-like supporting body 1 which has a radius R and of which the revolving shaft is the origin of an x/y coordinate system. Coating screens 3, 3' condense the metallic vapor jet from a crucible evaporator 4 onto the substrate 2 at the point of a range 5.     Abstract: PURPOSE: To enable the increase of perpendicular coercive force and saturation magnetization without rising a substrate temp. and to improve a reproducing level by subjecting a polymer substrate film to a plasma pretreatment by etching using a prescribed gas then depositing a magnetic material layer by evaporation. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium formed by laminating cobalt/ chromium layers of coherent ferromagnetic thin layers on the polymer material is subjected to the plasma pretreatment by ion etching or plasma etching using the nitrogen- or oxygen-contg. gas. At this time, the magnetic moment per cobalt atom in the magnetic layer is increased and the perpendicular coercive force is increased. As a result, the recording properties and reproducing level are improved without rising the temp. of the substrate.

The vapor jet 7 of the ferromagnetic material injected form the evaporating device 6 toward the cylindrical drums 4, 4' in the reduced pressure chamber 1 is brought into contact with the surfaces of two sheets of the band-lie substrates 2, 2' guided in the direction facing each other on two pieces of the separate cylindrical drums 4, 4' at the angle not below 30 deg. and not over 90 deg.. The evaporating device 6 is shifted in the axial line direction of the drums so as to be arranged between two pieces of the cylindrical drums 4, 4'.
