    Abstract: PURPOSE: To maximize the yield of a magnetic material by using a PVD method by vapor deposition of the magnetic material in an oblique angle direction at the time of forming a thin-film metallic layer on a polymer substrate. CONSTITUTION: The web-like substrate 2 passes over such a drum-like supporting body 1 which has a radius R and of which the revolving shaft is the origin of an x/y coordinate system. Coating screens 3, 3' condense the metallic vapor jet from a crucible evaporator 4 onto the substrate 2 at the point of a range 5. The angel range opened for coating on the substrate 2 is regulated by graduation angles Φ1 , Φ2 and is determined by the position of the evaporator 4. The coordinate base point of the angles Φ2, Φ1 is calculated in the counterclockwise direction starting from the position Xaxis of the coordinate system existing at the revolving shaft of the drum-like supporting body 1. The coordinate system of the evaporator 4 is like equation I. In the equation, A: the max. value of the quantity of the metal vapor butting against the substrate 2, β1 , β2 : the angles between the central perpendicular line of the evaporator 4 and the line connecting the center of the evaporator 4 and the ends of the coating screens 3, 3', (n): the evaporation rate specific to the evaporating metal source and is a value of 2 to 5.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To enable the increase of perpendicular coercive force and saturation magnetization without rising a substrate temp. and to improve a reproducing level by subjecting a polymer substrate film to a plasma pretreatment by etching using a prescribed gas then depositing a magnetic material layer by evaporation. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium formed by laminating cobalt/ chromium layers of coherent ferromagnetic thin layers on the polymer material is subjected to the plasma pretreatment by ion etching or plasma etching using the nitrogen- or oxygen-contg. gas. At this time, the magnetic moment per cobalt atom in the magnetic layer is increased and the perpendicular coercive force is increased. As a result, the recording properties and reproducing level are improved without rising the temp. of the substrate.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To magnetize a thick magnetic layer by a magnetic head by arraying magnetic fine particles so that the magnetic head has a numeric gradient of the magnetic field strength and indicates a specific value. CONSTITUTION: A numeric gradient of a magnetic field strength H of a head is expressed by formula I, and magnetic fine particles are arrayed so that the magnetic field indicates a maximal magnetic field strength or a strength value close to it at least at each write position on a magnetic recording carrier with respect to a stationarily standardized distance z/g between a head mirror face and an upper face of the magnetic recording carrier. The magnetic fine particles in a magnetic layer are arrayed so that an easy axis forms an inclined angle of 6 to the running direction X of the carrier. The carrier runs in the running direction X=A, while in (b) it runs in the inverse direction X=B, and this brings a vertical gap z to the magnetic head with a head air gap length (g). Thus, a thick magnetic layer can be magnetized by the magnetic head.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium which is constituted of a sheet-shaped polymer substrate and a metallic contact thin layer formed on a treated main surface of the substrate by a PVD method, having 50 to 1000nm thickness, being ferromagnetic and containing cobalt and which causes no cracking, has no internal stress, is uniform and mechanically stable. CONSTITUTION: The magnetic recording medium is constituted of the sheet- shaped polymer substrate at least one main surface of which is pretreated by ion etching and the metallic contact thin layer which is formed on the treated main surface of the substrate by the PVD method, has 50 to 1000nm thickness, is ferromagnetic and contains cobalt. At least the main surfaces of the substrate for the metallic thin layer are denatured in advance by ion etching with a gas containing nitrogen or oxygen.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve the adhesiveness of a magnetic layer to a polymer substrate by irradiating the substrate with UV having such energy density as not to cause ablation in a specified wavelength region by means of excimer laser. CONSTITUTION: A polymer substrate is irradiated with UV having such energy density as not to cause ablation in the wavelength region of 150-400nm by means of a noninterference excimer plan or excimer laser. The energy density depends on the polymer. In this case, UV excimer laser is preferably used and the number of pulses is preferably made as small as 1-25 pulses per unit area of the substrate. The treated substrate is coated with a magnetic coating material prepd. by dispersing a pigment in a binder mixture contg. polyurethane, a dried binder, a dispersant, a lubricant and inorg. filler particles and then orientation with a magnet and smoothening by calendering are carried out.
