Abstract: A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery includes a positive electrode of vanadium pentoxide, a negative electrode of lithium-doped carbonaceous material, and an organic electrolyte liquid containing a lithium salt. The electric capacities of the positive and negative materials are selected such that the electric capacity of the carbonaceous material at a potential of 1 volt or lower vs. lithium counter electrode is 0.8 to 1.8 times the electric capacity of vanadium pentoxide at a potential of 2.5 volts or higher vs. lithium counter electrode. Graphitized mesophase microspheres resulting from carbonization of pitch is preferred carbonaceous material. The battery is improved in both charge/discharge cycle and overdischarge properties.

Abstract: A secondary cell (secondary element) is described having a non-aqueous, liquid electrolyte with an improved discharge capacity, a positive electrode which contains an active material in the form of an organic, electrically conducting polymer, and a negative electrode. An element, in direct or indirect contact with the active material, of the positive electrode is formed from a stainless steel which contains at least 16 % by weight of chromium and at least 0.5 % by weight of molybdenum or less than 5 % by weight of nickel. A stainless steel which contains at least 16 % by weight of chromium and from 0.1 to 5 % by weight of titanium and/or niobium is also suitable. Between the positive and the negative electrode, a non-aqueous solution of an electrolyte in a non-aqueous solvent mixture which contains at least 25 % by weight of propylene carbonate and at least 25 % by weight of ethylene carbonate, is present.

A container having the elements received therein is provided with a vent mechanism.
