    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an N-acylamino acid useful as a starting material for peptide synthesis and an intermediate for production of an active substance having biological activity by reacting a specific amide and an aldehyde in the presence of a specified catalyst. SOLUTION: The N-acylamino acid of the formula is obtained by carrying out a reaction of (A) an amide of the formula; R'-CO-NHR" (R' and R" are each H, a 1-26C saturated alkyl, etc.), (e.g. acetamide, etc.), (B) an aldehyde of the formula; R-CHO (R is H, carboxy, etc.), (e.g. cyclohexylcarboxaldehyde, etc.), (C) an acid (e.g. sulfuric acid, etc.), and (D) carbon monoxide in the presence of (E) a metal catalyst such as rhodium catalyst, etc., (e.g. chloro-1,5- cyclooctadienyliridium dimer, etc.). The reaction is preferably carried out by using 0.5-5 equivalent of the component B, 0.1-10 mole.% of the component C and 0.0001-5% of the component E based on the component A.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for easily producing the objective decomposition products in high selectivity, at a little use of a catalyst or at high space time yield, with the optional use of an acidic catalyst by subjecting a linear or cyclic acetal to reductive decomposition, in the presence of a heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen, in a formate-containing aqueous medium under specific conditions. SOLUTION: A linear or cyclic acetal is subjected to reductive decomposition, in the presence of heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen, at a pH of less than 7 under a pressure of 0.1-30 MPa at a temperature of 200-300 deg.C, preferably 200-280 deg.C in a formate-containing aqueous medium, wherein the weight ratio of a hydrogenation activating metal to the acetal is less than 0.1 in the case of the operation of a suspension. Preferable examples of the catalyst to be used above are supported catalysts prepared by supporting the hydrogenation activating metal such as Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt, Cu, Cr, Fe, Co or Ni on a base of a support consisting of activated carbon or an oxide.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply carry out intermolecular etherification of an alcohol and degradation of ether in high ether yield and good monoether selectivity without producing a by-product such as colored material by using a combination of an acid catalyst with a hydrogenation catalyst and water as a solvent. SOLUTION: When a monohydric or polyhydric alcohol (A) is etherified or an ether is subjected to ether decomposition in water phase in the presence of (B) an acid catalyst (e.g. formic acid, acetic acid or propionic acid) at >=100 deg.C (e.g. 120-380 deg.C) to carry out intermolecular etherification of the component A and ether degradation, the reaction is carried out in coexistence of (C) a hydrogenation catalyst which is stable to an acid [e.g. monovalent or polyvalent noble metal (compound) which is a series of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium or platinum]under hydrogen atmosphere (e.g. 1-15 MPa hydrogen partial pressure). The reaction is preferably carried out by using the component B in an amount of 0.1-20 wt.% based on polyol and the component C in an amount of 0.001-10 wt.% based on the component A or ether to be degraded.

    Abstract: Process for producing 5- or 6-membered cyclic ethers (anhydropolyols) comprises subjecting polyols having at least 4 C atoms and at least 2 OH groups to cyclodehydration at at least 100 degrees C in the presence of water, an acid catalyst, an acid-stable hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen. Preferably the reaction temperature is 100-380 degrees C, preferably 180-280 degrees C. The H2 pressure is 1-20 MPa, preferably 3-10 MPa. The hydrogenation catalyst comprises Ru, Rh, Pd and/or Pt as metals or metal compounds. The hydrogenation catalyst is used in an amount of 0.001-10 (preferably 0.01-1) wt.% based on the polyol. The acid catalyst is a 1-10C aliphatic carboxylic acid, preferably formic, acetic or propionic acid. The acid catalyst is used in an amount of 0.1-20 (especially 0.5-10) wt.% based on the polyol. The polyol is a tetritol, pentitol or hexitol.
