Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve the operation method of the exhaust emission control device for the internal combustion engine which is operated at lean air/fuel ratio for the main course of its operation. SOLUTION: An exhaust emission control device incorporating a nitrogen oxides storage catalytic converter and a sulfur trap, wherein: a) at the excess air factor higher than 1 and an exhaust gas temperature TK within an activity window ΔTNOX, the nitrogen oxides and the sulfur oxides contained in the exhaust gas are respectively stored on the nitrogen oxides storage catalyst and the sulfur oxides storage catalyst while simultaneously maintaining the exhaust gas temperature TS lower than the desulfurization temperature TS. De SOx and periodically reducing the excess air factor of the exhaust gas below 1 to discharge the stored nitrogen oxides (completion of 1 adsorption cycle); b) after each completion of a predetermined number N1 of cycles of nitrogen oxides adsorption cycle, the exhaust gas temperature TS is raised to a level at or higher than the desulfurization temperature TS. De SOx of the sulfur trap to desulfurize the sulfur trap and to reduce the excess air factor of the exhaust gas to below 1. The process a) and the process b) are periodically repeated.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the superior nitrogen oxide conversion rate on a continuous lean fuel-air mixture operation zone by additionally providing a second functional layer with hydrocarbon storage function for a catalyst having two functional layers consisting of a first layer of nitrogen oxide storage function and the second layer of catalyst function. SOLUTION: A catalyst for converting a nitrogen oxide in an oxygen rich exhaust gas from a diesel engine under the optimum utilization of a reducing component contained in exhaust gas is provided with a second functional layer absorbing the catalyst activities and also hydrocarbon contained in a lean exhaust gas and formed on a first functional layer of function of storing the nitrogen oxide. As an acidic carrier material for the catalyst activity component in the second functional layer, for example, aluminum silicate, silicon dioxide, titanium oxide or zirconium oxide can be used. The second functional layer contains aluminum-removed Y-zeolite, zeolite ZMS5, aluminumremoved mordenite or a mixture of them.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel catalyst for purifying an exhaust gas from a diesel engine. SOLUTION: This catalyst contains a zeolite mixture of zeolites different in modulus, a platinum group metal, aluminum silicate, and a metal oxide selected from the group consisting of aluminum oxide and titanium oxide. In the aluminum silicate, the weight ratio of the silicon dioxide to the aluminum oxide is from 0.005 to 1. The platinum group metal is deposited only on the metal oxide.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine (2) exhaust gas purification device (1) is operated predominantly using lean air-fuel ratios. It has a sulfur filter (5) followed by a NOx storage catalyzer (6). Process for operating an internal combustion engine exhaust gas purification device comprises:- (a) storing the nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas on a storage catalyst and the sulfur oxides on the sulfur trap at air factors of above 1 and exhaust gas temperatures TK within the activity window DELTA TNOX, in which the exhaust gas temperature TS is smaller than the desulfurization temperature TS DeSOx, and cyclically reducing the air factor of the exhaust gas below 1 to release the stored nitrogen oxides; and (b) desulfurizing the sulfur trap by increasing the exhaust gas temperature TS above the desulfurization temperature of the sulfur trap and reducing the air factor of the exhaust gas below 1 and cyclically repeating steps (a) and (b).

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for operating an exhaust gas treatment unit for an internal combustion engine which is operated with lean normalised air/fuel ratios over most of the operating period. The exhaust gas treatment unit contains a nitrogen oxides storage catalyst with an activity window .DELTA.T NOX for the storage of nitrogen oxides at normalised air/fuel ratios of greater than 1 and release of the nitrogen oxides at normalised air/fuel ratios of less than or equal to 1 and a sulfur trap, located upstream of the nitrogen oxides storage catalyst, with a sulfur desorption temperature T S,DeSOx above which the sulfates stored on the sulfur trap are decomposed at normalised air/fuel ratios of less than or equal to 1. The nitrogen oxides contained in the exhaust gas are stored on the nitrogen oxides storage catalyst and the sulfur oxides are stored on the sulfur trap at normalised air/fuel ratios greater than 1 and exhaust gas temperatures T K within the activity window T NOX, wherein at the same time the exhaust gas temperature just upstream of the sulfur trap is lower than its sulfur desorption temperature T S,DeSOx. By cyclic lowering of the normalised air/fuel ratio in the exhaust gas to less than 1 the stored nitrogen oxides are released again from the storage catalyst. (Conclusion of a storage cycle). After each predetermined number N1 of nitrogen oxides storage cycles, sulfur is removed from the sulfur trap. This takes place by raising the exhaust gas temperature just upstream of the sulfur trap to above its sulfur desorption temperature T S,DeSOx and also lowering the normalised air/fuel ratio in the exhaust gas to less than 1.
