    Abstract: The invention relates to novel acetals of the general formula R CO-X-O-C(R R )-O-Y-COR , in which R , R independently of each other are hydrogen, a C1-C12 alkyl radical, a C6-C12 aryl radical or a C7-C12 aralkyl radical; X, Y independently of each other are a branched or unbranched C1-C30 alkylene radical or a branched or unbranched C2-C30 alkylene radical; R , R independently of each other are -OH, -OM, -OR , -NH2, -NHR or -NR R , -M being an alkaline ion, an alkaline earth ion or an ammonium ion of the formula HN R R R or mixtures thereof, R to R independently of each other being hydrogen, a C1-C10 alkyl or a C1-C10 hydroxyalkyl, and R to R independently of each other being a C1-C200 alkyl radical, a C6-C50 aryl radical or a C7-C50 aralkyl radical, and R to R possibly being substituted with heteroatoms or interrupted by heteroatoms, and R and R possibly jointly forming a ring of 4 to 10 atoms. Said novel acetals are suitable as base oils for metal working liquids.

    Abstract: A composite membrane comprises a porous base membrane (A) and a fluorine-contg. perm-selective layer (C) 10-500 nm thick consisting of a copolymer of: (a) 10-80 mole% units of a vinyl ester of formula (I); (b1) 5-40 mole% vinyl alcohol units of formula (II) or (b2) 5-50 mole% units of formula (III); and (c) at least 10 mole% fluoro-olefin, with the OH gp.-contg. chains crosslinked with one another. In the formula, R1-R3 = H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, with a total of 5-30 C atoms over all 3 gps.; R4 = OH, opt. with up to 10% of the gps. R4 replaced by -OCOR5 (with R5 = Me, Et or Pr); R6 = 1-6C linear or branched alkylene. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of this membrane, by dissolving the above terpolymer in a solvent, mixing with a polyfunctional isocyanate, spreading the soln. on water, evaporating the solvent and transferring the layer (C) thus obtd. to a base membrane (A). Also claimed is a membrane as described above in which the copolymer in layer (C) is uncrosslinked. Preferably, R1-R3 = alkyl or cycloalkyl with a total of 7-9 C atoms, pref. with at least one of these gps. = Me; R6 = 1,4-butylene.
