Abstract: The plate-, foil- or strip-shape support materials for offset printing plates are based on chemically, mechanically and/or electromechanically roughened aluminum, or on one of its alloys. Optionally, the aluminum may also have an aluminum oxide layer produced by anodic oxidation. One of the two surfaces the support material has a hydrophilic coating of at least one salt-type hydrophilic organic polymer which is a complex-type product obtained by reacting (a) a water-soluble organic polymer having acid functional groups containing phosphorus or sulfur (for example, polyvinylphosphonic or polyvinylsulfonic acid) with (b) a salt of an at least divalent metal cation. In a process for manufacturing this support material, the complex-type reaction product, dissolved in an aqueous acid, is applied to at least one surface of the support material and the support material thus modified is dried. It is also possible, however, to produce the complex-type reaction product of the components (a) and (b) on the support material. The support material is used in the preparation of offset printing plates having a light-sensitive layer.

Abstract: This invention pertains to a process for electrochemically modifying electrochemically roughened aluminum or aluminum alloy-based support materials for printing plates. An aluminum or aluminum alloy-based support material is electrochemically roughened using alternating current in an electrolyte containing at least one from the group consisting of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. Subsequently, at least one surface of the material is treated in an aqueous electrolyte, with the roughened material being made the cathode. The cathodic treatment results in removal of material from the surface in the order of from 0.1 to 10 g/m2, and is carried out in an aqueous electrolyte which has a pH value in the range from 3 to 11 and includes at least one water-soluble salt in a concentration ranging from 5 g/l up to the saturation limit thereof. The cathodic treatment is appropriately conducted using direct current at a current density from 3 to 100 A/dm2, at a temperature from 15 DEG to 90 DEG C., and for a duration from 5 to 90 seconds. The removal of material is optionally followed by an anodic oxidation of the support material and a hydrophilizing post-treatment of the oxide layer. Support materials which have been prepared in this manner are used in the manufacture of offset printing plates carrying a radiation-sensitive coating.

Abstract: Disclosed is a process for electrochemically roughening aluminum or aluminum alloys for use as printing plate supports, in an aqueous mixed electrolyte solution containing hydrochloric acid (HCl) and, as an additional inorganic electrolyte, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of condensed phosphoric acids, amidosulfonic acid, and the water-soluble alkali metal salts and ammonium salts thereof. In particular, the solution contains from 0.5 to 10% by weight of HCl and from 0.05 to 5.0% by weight of the additional inorganic electrolyte (for example, diphosphoric acid or polyphosphoric acid). The support materials which are particularly uniformly roughened are employed in the production of offset-printing plates.

Abstract: Process for selective additive correction of defective spots in a copier layer on a conductive substrate, comprises applying a D.C. voltage between the substrate and an electrode, applying to the flaw an electrically conductive soln. of an organic substance (I) and depositing the (I) in the flaw at a current density of 0.01-100 A/dm2. (I) is pref. an organic polymer. The concn. of (I) in soln. is from 0.1 wt.% up to saturation concn., esp. up to 20 wt.%. The (I) may additionally contain radiation-sensitive materials or be mixed with these prior to deposition in the fault. The conductive soln. pref. has a pH of 2-10 and may be in the form of a gel. The (I) may be deposited onto the substrate via a permeable material such as a membrane.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the formation of negative copies in which a photosensitive or radiation-sensitive copying material comprising a layer base and a normally positive-working photosensitive or radiation-sensitive layer deposited thereon is irradiated through an image, treated thermally, irradiated over the entire surface after cooling and then developed with an alkaline developer. The thermal treatment is carried out with water or with an aqueous solution at temperatures in the range from about 50 to 100, preferably 60-90 DEG C, in the course of between about 1 second and 5 minutes, preferably 5 seconds and 1 minute, the whole-surface irradiation is carried out on the still hot copying material and the subsequent development is carried out in the course of between about 10 seconds and 2 minutes, preferably 15 seconds and 1 minute. The process can be carried out in standard frames known from positive processing and used in practice and yields perfect printing templates.

Abstract: A developer compsn. for developing an exposed negative working reproduction layer on a support comprises (i) water, (ii) at least one organic solvent, (iii) at least one alkaline reacting agent, (iv) at least one complex former, (v) at least one anionic surfactant, (vi) at least one emulsifier, (vii) at least one n-alkanoic acid and/or a salt of this and (viii) at least one buffer agent. Abstract: A process for producing relief copies wherein the light-hardenable layer of a light-hardenable copying material, which contains a photopolymerizable mixture, a photodimerizable polymeric compound or a diazonium salt polycondensation product, is exposed to a light image, the exposed layer is subjected to a brief ultrasonic treatment, and the unexposed areas of the layer are thereafter washed away by means of a developer. As a result of the ultrasonic treatment, shorter exposure times may be used and better in-depth hardening of the layer may be achieved.
