    Abstract: Transition metal compounds of formula (I), other than 8,8'-biguaiazulene-titanium dichloride, in which M = a Group IIIb, IVb, Vb or VIb transition metal; Y = H, OH, halogen, 1-40C hydrocarbon-containing group or N(R )2 (with R = halogen, 1-10C alkyl or 6-10C aryl); k = (valency of M ) minus 2; k = 1 if Y = a butadiene unit; R -R = H, halogen, 1-40C hydrocarbyl, -Si(R )3, -N(R )2, -Si(OR )3, -Si(SR )3 or -P(R )2, or two or more adjacent R groups plus the linking atoms may form a ring system; A = -(Y)n-, -Ä(Q=Q)l(Q)lÜn-, -(Q-Y-Q)n-, -(Q-Y-Y-Q)n-, -(Q-O-Y-O-Q)n-, -(Q)n-, -Ä(Q)l-Z-QÜn- or -ÄQ-Q-Z-Q-Q)n-; n = 1-20; l = 1-20; Z = >NR , >CO, >PR , >P(O)R , >SO, >SO2, O or S; Y = -M R R -; Q = -CR R -; R , R = H, halogen or 1-40C hydrocarbyl, or two R groups or two R groups or one R and one R group plus the linking atoms may form a ring system; M = Si, Ge or Sn. Also claimed is: (i) a process for the production of (I), by reacting a compound (II) with a compound (III) in presence of base, deprotonating the product with a base R M (with R = 1-10C hydrocarbyl; M = Group Ia or IIa metal) and reacting the compound obtained with a compound M Yk+2; (ii) catalysts containing (I) and cocatalysts; (iii) a process for the production of olefin polymers by polymerisation of olefins in presence of this catalyst; (iv) olefin polymers obtained by this process.

In (I), Cp = optionally substituted cyclopentadienyl; Ind = optionally substituted indenyl; M = tetravalent metal; R -R = H or 1-20C hydrocarbyl; m = 1 or 2; k, l = 1 if m = 1; k, l = 0 if m = 2. Also claimed are (i) catalysts (I-A) containing compound(s) (I) and cocatalyst(s), (ii) a process for the production of polyolefins by polymerisation of olefins in presence of these catalysts, (iii) polyolefins obtained by this process, (iv) moulded products containing these polyolefins, and (v) a process for the production of (I) by reacting compounds of formula (II) with compounds of formula M(NR 2NR 2NR3 NR 2) (III). The preferred cocatalyst is an aluminium and/or boron compound. The catalyst may also contain a support, and metallocene (I) may be prepolymerised.
