    Abstract: Method of manufacturing optical couplers from polymers, the coupler structure being produced with the aid of an injection-moulding process and amorphous polymers, in particular PMMA, polystyrenes, polycarbonates, polyolefins, polyesters, polysulphones, polyethersulphones, polyetherimides, polyacrylates, polyamides or polyestercarbonates being used with preference as polymers. The coupler element is solid and may be coated with a polymer which has a lower refractive index than the coupler, so that the diversion takes place in the coupler itself.

    Abstract: HOE 90/F 357 Process for the production of an optical coupler for polymeric optical fibers In a process for the production of an optical coupler for polymeric optical fibers using ultrasound welding, the fibers are warmed, before the welding, to a temperature of from 50 to 250.degree.C for from 0.2 to 3 hours. The polymeric optical fibers are introduced into a plastic tube which melts with the fibers during the welding operation to form a unit. In another embodiment, a connector bar which has the same refractive index as the core material of the polymeric optical fibers can be inserted into the plastic tube, the polymeric optical fibers are brought into contact with the connector, and the plastic tube, the connector bar and the fibers are welded to one another under the action of ultrasound.

    Abstract: Measuring device for the determination of the concentrations of inorganic and organic compounds in a sample, with a sensor which is to be brought into contact with the sample and which contains a fluorescence-optical indicator which after excitation via an excitation light source fluoresces as a function of the present concentration of the inorganic or organic compound to be detected. The measuring device has an arrangement for measuring and analyzing the incident radiation and the re-emitted fluorescence light. The measuring device contains a sensor element which is to be brought into contact with the sample and consists of a polymer matrix which is prepared from a) a matrix component which is derived from one or more units of the formula I where R - is hydrogen, deuterium or methyl; R - and R -, independently of one another, are hydrogen, deuterium or methyl, and the degree of polymerization, n is an integer in the range from 80 to 2500, preferably from 200 to 2000; b) a dye component which is immobilized covalently on the acyl chloride groups of the matrix component and c) one or more swelling components which are bound covalently to the remaining free acyl chloride groups of the matrix component.
