Abstract: Antibacterial coatings and methods of making the antibacterial coatings are described herein. In particular, a method for forming an organocatalyzed polythioether coating is provided in which a first solution including a bis-silylated dithiol and a fluoroarene is prepared. A second solution including an organocatalyst is prepared. The first solution and the second solution are mixed to form a mixed solution. The mixed solution is applied to a substrate, and the substrate is cured.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a system for sensing urine pH. A non-limiting example of the system includes a urinary catheter tube for insertion into a bladder of a patient, wherein the urine catheter tube includes an inner cavity. The system also includes a collection vessel connected to the urinary catheter tube. The system also includes a FET-based pH sensing device including a pH sensing surface and a reference electrode, wherein the pH sensing surface and the reference electrode have a surface exposed to the inner cavity. Such embodiments can advantageously provide a real-time, sensitive measurement of urine for timely detection and monitoring of the physiological condition of a subject with a miniaturized FET-based pH sensor.

Abstract: Antibacterial coatings and methods of making the antibacterial coatings are described herein. A first branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) layer is formed and a first glyoxal layer is formed on a surface of the BPEI layer. The first BPEI layer and the first glyoxal layer are cured to form a crosslinked BPEI coating. The first BPEI layer can be modified with superhydrophobic moieties, superhydrophilic moieties, or negatively charged moieties to increase the antifouling characteristics of the coating. The first BPEI layer can be modified with contact-killing bactericidal moieties to increase the bactericidal characteristics of the coating.

Abstract: A system for 200 and method of sensing urine pH is presented which includes a urinary catheter tube 206 for insertion into a bladder of a patient, wherein the urine catheter tube includes an inner cavity, and a collection vessel 210 connected to the urinary catheter tube. A transistor (e.g. FET)-based pH sensing device 204 including a pH sensing surface (412, Fig 4) and a reference electrode (418, Fig 4) is also included; wherein in a first embodiment the pH sensing surface and the reference electrode have a surface exposed to the inner cavity. In a second embodiment urine pH is sensed by (i) applying a zero voltage to a collector (606, Fig 6) and the reference electrode, (ii) applying a voltage to an emitter (612, Fig 6) and (iii) measuring a current from the collector.
