Abstract: Involves operating high order cache-memory and the low order cache-memory in different data 'exchange' modes. When a system is accelerated or run up to speed, an exchange of selected data for selecting a data 'exchange' mode for each cache-memory between the cache-memory of the high order and the cache-memory of the low order, takes place. Avoidance of errors in data storage in cache-memories used in computer systems based on hard-disc drives (HDDs) and with high and low order cache-memories being used and operated in different data 'exchange' modes, such as the least recently used (LRU) and least frequently used (LFU) modes, when a cache-memory has no free data storage locations available, involves operating the high order cache-memory and the low order cache-memory in different data 'exchange' modes, and when a system is accelerated or run up to speed, an exchange of selected data for selecting a data 'exchange' mode for each cache-memory between the cache-memory of the high order and the cache-memory of the low order, takes place..

Abstract: A system and method are provided that reduce the amount of data held commonly in both high-ranking and low-ranking cache memories, thereby having each of those cache memories hold data more efficiently. More particularly, a computer system is provided with an HDC card 21 connected to an expansion bus 20 and an HDD unit 22 connected to the HDC card 21. The HDC card 21 is provided with a disk cache (high-ranking cache memory) and the HDD unit 22 is provided with a disk cache 54 (low-ranking cache memory). The HDC card 21 and the HDD unit 22 exchange select information for selecting a swap mode of each cache memory when the system is started up, thereby selecting different swap modes according to the exchanged select information respectively.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device, storage device, computer system, data processing method, and program transmitting device which can effectively protect data stored in a storage medium and a recording disk. SOLUTION: When the number of times of the retrial until a successful readout of data is a prescribed number of times or more, the data are once saved in a spare sector SS, the data are overwritten in a data sector DS in which the data are stored originally. Furthermore, at the time of saving data in the spare sector SS and overwritting the data in the data sector DS, pointer information on a RDM table stored in a reserved area RA which is a nonvolatile memory is rewritten suitably, respectively.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently hold data in respective cache memories by holding data which are common to a high-order and a low-order cache memory or decreasing the number of pieces of data held in the high-order and low-order cache memories in common. SOLUTION: A computer system is equipped with an HDC card 21 which is connected to an extension bus 20 and an HDD drive 22 which is connected to an HDC card 21. The HDC card 21 is equipped with a disk cache (high-order cache memory) and the HDD drive 22 is equipped with a disk cache 54 (low- order cache memory). The HDC card 21 and HDD drive 22 send and receive selection information for selecting swap modes of the cache memories when the system is started and selects mutually different swap modes according to the sent and received selection information.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable eliminating needless spaces between data recording tracks by reading a servo pattern by a positioned read/write head, detecting amplitude of an generated output signal, and detecting that it has become a specific value of amplitude of an output signal from a positioning head. SOLUTION: It is detected that a servo pattern is read out by a read/write head being moving and its output signal value is made 50-Gw/2% of amplitude of an output signal generated by a positioned read/write head. Then, Gw is a scheduled gap width between data recording tracks. Reduction of amplitude of an output signal to 50-Gw/2% indicates that a head is moved from a prescribed position by (Hw+Gw)/2(Hw is head width), when it is not decreased, it is examined whether a head reaches a crush-stop of the outside or not.

A control section 4e or a control section 5a changes a table in accordance with recording line density of each recording plane 1a-1f at the time of recording and reproducing, and changes recording and reproducing characteristics.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk drive device, a load/unload device and its control method surely unloading it at a source OFF time and improving reliability. SOLUTION: The disk drive device is provided with a VCM (voice coil motor) spindle driver 12, a, magnetic head 13, an actuator mechanism 14 moving a head slider having the magnetic head 13 over the magnetic disk 11 surface and to a retreat position, a lamp block 15 and a CPU/HDC (hard disk controller) 16 controlling load/unload, controlling a speed of an actuator and controlling operation such as read-out/write-in, etc., of data for the disk 11. The CPU/HDC 16 receives a specified command issued from a host just before power off, executes this command operation, and then, executes the unload control and informs the host of command end after this unload control is ended.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it easy to analyze a hang state by monitoring the time in which an instruction received from an external device is executed, and saving information in a volatile memory to a nonvolatile recording means when the execution time of the instruction exceeds a specified time. SOLUTION: The pressing time in which the MPU 12 of a control part 5 executes the instruction received from an external host device 10, is monitored and when the execution of the instruction does not ends within a specified time, the contents of a RAM 14 as the volatile memory are saved in a reserved area on a magnetic disk 1 as the nonvolatile recording means. Consequently, the disk drive device can dump the contents of the RAM 14 in case of a hang state without requiring an indication from a host device 10. Therefore, even if a hang state that can not be controlled from the host device is entered, the hang state can easily be analyzed.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the range of fluctuations of feedback signals to a hard disk device by providing first and second data recording surfaces on a data recording disk and making the track pitch between adjacent data recording tracks of the first recording surface and the track pitch between adjacent data tracks of the second recording surface different. SOLUTION: A head #1 moves by a distance D=(Hw+Gw)/2 from a position P4 to a position P5 to write servo patterns A5 and B5 by respectively overlapping them. The head #1 moves by the distance D=(Hw+Gw)/2 toward the most outside position of the data recording surface to write new servo patterns at respective positions. The counter being in a hard disk control circuit or an MPU counts the number of movings of the distance D=(Hw+Gw)/2 of the head #1 in the radial direction to store it in a memory and, thus, the number of servo tracks written on the recording surface can be known.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease reading errors of a storage device due to the bus noises, which are caused when data are transferred between a host device and the storage device, by simultaneously discontinuing the transfer of data to the host device and the reading of data out of the storage device when a reading error is detected. SOLUTION: A control part 8 controls the total operation of a disk drive device via the execution of a control program and then performs the read/write control to a magnetic disk 1 based on the commands and data, which are supplied from an information processor (host device) 10 via a bus 7. Then the processor of the part 8 detects whether the reading of data executed by a read/ write system 5 has an error due to the noises of the bus 7. If a reading error occurs due to the noises of the bus 7, the transfer of data to the device 10 and the reading of data out of the disk 1 are simultaneously discontinued. Then only the reading of data is executed.
