Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for deciding the configuration of a computer system having a planar device. SOLUTION: A read operation is carried out on a planar configuration memory 32 instructing respective planar devices 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 connectable to a planar board 2 on address. The configuration memory 32 to the respective available planar devices decides whether or not there is the address of a connection device which decides the memory 32 and also can be accessed via the planar devices. A read instruction is sent to the address of each connection device instructed by the memory 32 for the planar devices in order to decide configuration information with respect to each connection device and further to decide whether or not there is further another connection device accessible to the connection device.

Abstract: A computer system executes instructions for an I/O device not attached to the system. A quasi I/O attachment device is responsive to the commands for the unattached I/O device and generates an interrupt condition. The interrupt condition causes the command instructions for the unattached I/O device to be translated to command instructions for an I/O device connected to the computer system. The I/O device attached to the system performs the designated operation and generates associated I/O device status data. This associated I/O device status data is translated into I/O device status data for the unattached I/O device and thus permits a program for operating an unattached I/O device to operate instead an I/O device attached to the system which otherwise could not be operated by that program. A second embodiment performs the emulation of the unattached I/O device remotely of the central processing unit in the computer system.

Abstract: ALLOCATING AND RESOLVING NEXT VIRTUAL PAGES FOR INPUT/OUTPUT In a paged, virtual memory computer system an apparatus is provided for enabling I/O device adapters to request the CPU to allocate or resolve virtual pages into main storage pages as required for I/O data transfers. The I/O adapter provides the channel virtual address information specifying the requested page and channel function information which indicates whether the requested page is to be transferred from secondary storage into main storage or merely allocated as a page in main storage. The channel forms the virtual address information and the channel function information into a page request function event which is stored in an I/O event stack in main storage for retrieval and processing by the CPU. Abstract: SCAN AND READ CONTROL APPARATUS FOR A DISK STORAGE DRIVE IN A COMPUTER SYSTEM Control apparatus is provided for controlling a disk storage drive attachment in a computer system whereby records stored on the disk storage media are scanned and read within the same data field. The search key or search argument contained in main storage of the computer system is retrieved and compared with the key in the disk data field being scanned. The storage locations in the scan field not containing the search key are set to hexidecimal FF. The central processing unit (CPU) of the computer system is in a write to disk storage drive mode whereby the search argument is transferred from storage to the disk storage drive attachment as data is read from the disk storage drive. Decode apparatus senses the first hexidecimal FF from storage and switches the operation from a scan mode into a read mode and if a scan low or equal condition resulted from the comparison, the disk data field is read into the storage scan field with one byte of FF between the search key in storage and the newly stored disk data. The one byte of FF still provides an indication of the end of the search key. The operation then switches back to the scan mode and repeats in the manner described, i.e., sequential disk data fields are read into the storage scan field, until a comparison of equal or high results. When a high condition exists, a latch is set to block the storage of disk data in main storage because the storage scan field now contains the disk data field which had been sought, i.e., the one containing the desired index key.

Abstract: CONTROL APPARATUS FOR VIRTUAL ADDRESS TRANSLATION UNIT Control apparatus is responsive to CPU I/O commands for initiating chained I/O data transfers to cause virtual address translation (VAT) apparatus to translate a first virtual address to be used in the chained data transfer operation and load the translated (resolved) address in an I/O resolved address register reserved (unique) to the commanded I/O device connected to a shared I/O control unit and to repeat such an operation for each I/O device commanded by the CPU to do a data transfer and responsive to a command from the shared control unit indicating that one of the commanded I/O devices is ready for data transfer to become nonresponsive to further CPU I/O commands and cause the VAT to resolve a succession of virtual addresses for the data transfer and to load the resolved addresses into I/O resolved address registers shared for use by all of I/O devices whereby a data transfer operation can commence using the resolved address in the register unique to the I/O device which is first ready for data transfer and thereafter continue with data transfers using resolved addresses from the registers shared by all of the I/O devices but captured for use by the I/O device first ready for data transfer. Upon the data transfers being completed for that I/O device, the VAT resolves a succession of virtual addresses and loads them into the shared registers for use during data transfers by the next ready I/O device in response to a command from the shared I/O control unit. Abstract: A look-aside buffer in a computer system has a memory containing at least a first type of data and a second type of data stored in a page format. The look-aside buffer is arranged to retain at least two different real addresses as resolved by the system which indicate pages containing the different types of data. One of the addresses is indicated as least recently used by a marker and such address is deleted when a further different address is resolved by the system unless the address being resolved is an address corresponding to the first type of data. In such a case, the marker is not changed such that the second type of data addresses are not deleted from the look-aside buffer as a result of resolution of a first type data page address by the system.
