Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain the reduction of power consumption by providing a first circuit for executing a certain function at a first ordinary speed, a second circuit for executing the same function at a second lower speed and a control system for selecting any one of first and second circuits for executing that function, and further providing a mechanism for controlling the execution speed of a processor instruction. SOLUTION: A processor 10 is provided with various equivalent functions 26 and 28. Each of functions 26 mounting any process is provided with a logically equivalent function 28 as well. For example, a circuit A20 has a functionally equivalent corresponding circuit A'22. The difference of the circuits A20 and A'22 is the operation of the circuit A'22 is slow so that required energy can be a little. Similarly, a circuit B has a functionally equivalent corresponding circuit B' and a circuit C has a functionally equivalent corresponding circuit C'. Further, the processor 10 is provided with a control mechanism 18 for selecting any suitable circuit on such conditions.

Abstract: A processor with multiple equivalent functional units for power reduction, which includes a mechanism for controlling the selection of functional units. Specifically, the processor comprises a first circuit performing a predetermined function at a first speed, a second circuit for performing the same predetermined function at a second speed, and a control system for selecting either the first or second circuit to perform the function. The control system further includes a mechanism for controlling the rate of execution of the processor instructions in the pipeline in order to compensate for the speed at which the first or second circuit was performing the predetermined function.
