Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visual characteristics without changing the characteristics of a front direction by using an optical compensation film having a lagging axis parallel or vertical with/to the transmission axis of a polarizing plate. SOLUTION: When a light advancing obliquely downward 15 transmitted through a polarizing plate 64 and an optical compensation film 66 and arrives at the surface of a liquid crystal(LC) layer 60, a linearly polarized light is rotated only by an angle of (ϕ+180 deg.) and turned to a linearly polarized light vertical to the transmission axis of a polarizing plate 62. The polarization surface of the linearly polarized light arraving at the surface of the LC layer 60 is made parallel with an LC lagging axis 70, so that the obliquely advancing light also is not influenced by the double refraction property of the LC layer 60. Since the absorbing axis 73 of the plate 62 is parallel with the LC lagging axis of the LC layer 60, a light advancing obliquely upward 15 also turned to the linearly polarized light by the plate 62, straight advanced without being influenced by the double refraction of the LC layer 60, rotated by the film 66, and interrupted by the plate 64 because its polarization axis intersects with the transmission axis of the plate 64 at right angles.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To realize a display of high quality, in which thickness of a liquid crystal layer is evenly formed inside a surface and which has a low reflective screen in relation to the unnecessary external irregular light, by providing a shading layer formed on a board and an adhesive layer arranged in the periphery of the board. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display element is provided with a shading layer 1, glass boards 2, 2', and an adhesive layer 3, and especially, the adhesive layer 3 is arranged so as to avoid the generation of contact and overlap with a peripheral part of the glass boards 2, 2 and the shading layer 1. The shading layer 1 is formed with a picture element opening part 4, and other part is formed with a pattern so as to perform the shading as a shading part 5. Furthermore, two boards are arranged opposite to each other with a cell gap 6, and the adhesive layer 3 holds the cell gap 6 at the peripheral part of the boards. Namely, the shading layer 1 and the adhesive layer 3 are arranged with a constant clearance (space) without generating a contact with each other, and the cell gap 6 having the even inner surface can be obtained.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new reflection type liquid crystal display element having a high reflectance and bright display colors. SOLUTION: This reflection type liquid crystal display element is provided with a first liquid crystal layer 1, a second liquid crystal layer 2 and a third liquid crystal layer 3. A first selective reflection plate 4, a second selective reflection plate 5 and a third selective reflection plate 6 are provided at the lower sides of the respective liquid crystal layers so as to be adjacent to the respective liquid crystal layers. Then the display mode of the second liquid crystal layer 2 is determined corresponding to the display mode of the first liquid crystal layer 1 and the display mode of the third liquid crystal layer 3 is determined corresponding to the display modes of the first liquid crystal layer 1 and the second liquid crystal layer 2. Thereby the polarized state of the incident light A on each of the selective reflection plates is varied and the liquid crystal display is conducted by selectively reflecting or transmitting only light of the specified wavelength region.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a wide view angle liquid crystal display device with which problems such as the complication of processes, the change of electric characteristics and the instability of oriented state are canceled. CONSTITUTION: A soluble polyimide solution a prepared by dissolving soluble polyimide, of which the pretilt angle is changed by a burning temperature, in a solvent and applied to a color filter board 12 and a TFT substrate 14. The lower half of picture elements 28 on the color filter substrate 12 and the upper half of picture elements 28 on the TFT substrate 14 are heated and dried earlier than the other parts for prescribed time by irradiating them with laser beams, and the remaining parts are naturally dried. The pretilt angle of molecule 16A of liquid crystal 16 in contact with the heated and dried part gets small but the pretilt angle of molecule 16A in contact with the naturally dried part gets large and the direction of satisfactory view angle is inverted for the upper half and lower half of picture elements 28 so that the wide view angle can be obtained.

SOLUTION: In the device 10 for forming the alignment layer, the shape of an edge 32a of a mask 12 forming a slit 14 is determined based on the alignment layer direction of a liquid crystal. The shape of the edge 32a is determined by integrating the alignment direction of the liquid crystal. The alignment direction of the liquid crystal can be made uniform by forming the edge 32a in such a shape. Thus, a liquid crystal display device free from luminosity unevenness and color unevenness can be manufactured.

A first reflection member 6 and a second reflection member 7 are disposed on the principal planes 1A and 2A facing each other, respectively, of the first substrate 1 and the second substrate 2 so that the external light incident through the plurality of first light transmitting regions 4 into the transmission type liquid crystal display device 20 is reflected between the first reflection member 6 and the second reflection member 7 to pass several times in the liquid crystal layer 3 and then the light is made to exit through the second light transmitting regions 5.
