Abstract:
This invention relates to an acidic non-irritating lotion, cream or ointment for rejuvenating skin and hair which comprises a micronized, homogenized hydrogen of a cross-linked N-vinyl lactam polymer and an organic rejuvenating agent selected from the group consisting of pyruvic acid, a mono- or poly- carboxylated C1 to C20 hydrocarbon optionally substituted with from 1 to 3 hydroxy groups and ammonium and alkali metal salts of said acids and mixtures thereof including mixtures of the acids and/or said salts. The invention also relates to a cross-linked N-vinyl lactam polymer in the form of a stable, homogenized flowable hydrogel having microparticles which can be passed through a screen of between about 40 and about 350 mesh size and to the process for the preparation of the homogenized gel and to its use as a hair and skin conditioner or as a carrier for a cosmetically or pharmaceutically active substance.

A hair care composition comprising: (a) about 3-8 % of a water soluble or dispersible alkylated polyvinylpyrrolidone copolymer powder comprising: (i) about 90-95 % polyvinylpyrrolidone having a K-value of 30-90, and (ii) 5-10 % of an alkylene having 4 carbon atoms; (b) about 50-95 % water; and (c) about 0-60 % alcohol.
Abstract:
What is provided herein is a sunscreen composition consisting essentially of a crosslinked, neutralized terpolymer of maleic anhydride, a C1-C5 alkyl vinyl ether and a C12-C14 alpha-olefin monomer as a thickener; water; an ultraviolet sunscreening agent; and an emulsifier. In the prefered form of the invention, the monomers are present in a molar ratio of about 1:0.90-0.99:0.01-0.10, respectively, and are crosslinked with about 2-8 wt.% of a crosslinking agent based on the total weight of the monomers. Suitably, the crosslinked terpolymer is neutralized to increase water solubility.
Abstract:
What is provided herein is a method for treating acne vulgaris with a composition containing a stable, high purity, substantially anhydrous complex of PVP and H2O2 in which the constituents are present respectively in substantially a 1:1 molar ratio and the complex is a free-flowing, fine white powder.
Abstract:
What is provided herein is a method for preparing a product which comprises discrete microdroplets of an oil in water stabilized by in situ polymerization of a water-soluble vinyl monomer. The method comprises dispersing the oil in water, optionally with a surfactant, adding the water-soluble vinyl monomer, preferably vinylpyrrolidone, optionally with a comonomer, and polymerizing the monomer or comonomers in situ such that the oil is stabilized in the resulting polymer solution as discrete microdroplets. The product is used in conditioning hair care compositions and hair and skin care compositions, including those containing a water-soluble acryl comonomer.
Abstract:
What is provided herein are strongly swellable, moderately crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone polymers in the form of fine, white powders characterized by (a) an aqueous swelling parameter defined by its gel volume of about 15 to 150 ml/g, (b) a Brookfield viscosity in 5 % aqueous solution of at least about 10.000 cps, and (c) being prepared directly by a precipitation polymerization process in an organic solvent, in the presence of about 0,2 to 1 % by weight of vinylpyrrolidone, of a multifunctional crosslinking agent, preferably about 0.25 to 0.8 %, and optimally, about 0.35 to 0.6 %. Those polymers in the amount of 0.2 to 10 % by wt. are included in cosmetic compositions for the care of hair and skin.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a hair styling gel containing a neutralized, crosslinked maleic anhydride-C1-C5 alkyl vinyl ether copolymer. The formulation is a clear gel of suitable viscosity and pH which provides effective hair styling at low copolymer levels with no drag on comb-out and a clean feel on the hair after use.
Abstract:
The hair setting shampoo composition comprises a resin provided by about 1-15 % by weight of about a 20-50 % resin active alcoholic solution of the alkyl half-ester of a C1-C5 alkyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer having a molecular weight of at least one million, which is about 5-90 % neutralized, preferably with about 0.01-1 % by weight of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, about 5-60 % by weight of a surfactant, optionally 0-10 % by weight of added ethanol, and about 30-90 % by weight of water. The composition provides a subtle temporary set on hair of the user without the use of auxiliary fixatives in the composition. The mousse hair composition includes 3-15 % by weight of the alcoholic solution of the resin, 60-95 % by weight of water, 0.3-2.0 % by weight of a surfactant, and 0-30 % by weight of added ethanol.

Abstract:
N-hydrocarbon substituted lactams, particularly N-alkyl substituted lactams having formula (A), wherein R' is a hydrophobic radical such as linear or branched chain alkyl group containing from 8 to 20 carbon atoms, most preferably 8 to 14 carbon atoms; which lactams are capable of forming micelles in aqueous solutions irrespective of pH and have critical micelle concentrations of between about 1 x 10-3 and about 1 x 10-5 moles per liter. The invention also relates to the uses of the N-hydrocarbon substituted lactams which involve surfactant properties, such as solubility, wetting, viscosity building, emulsifying, foam boosting and/or complexing properties.
