Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide an ultra-high speed optical switching element which is operative at ordinary temp. and is capable of overcoming the threshold of switching of a several tens nanosecond band. CONSTITUTION: If incident light 4 passes a first multiple quantum well structure 1 changed in the properties of light by control light 3, transmitted light 5 is so changed as to have an increased light quantity by exposure development. When this light passes a second multiple quantum well structure 2, the exposure development by this second multiple quantum well structure 2 is increased by the exposure development by the changed light during the first several picoseconds and the quantity of the transmitted light 5 is eventually increased. Namely, the intensity of the transmitted light 5 increases in the short time band. On the other hand, the second MQWS acts as an absorber and the transmitted light quantity is increased during several picoseconds in the long time zone past the several picoseconds. The long time constant is offset by the second MWQS and an off-time is shortened.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To provide a converter, which utilizes the polling characteristic unique to nonlinear polymer and the optical anisotropy to be induced at polling and the electrical and optical effect, by forming an optical axis, which has the specified angle against the electric field direction of the TE mode and the TM mode, inside a core layer as a nonlinear polymer waveguide layer. CONSTITUTION: An optical axis having angles of 45 degrees to the respective electric field directions of the TE mode and the TM mode is formed inside a core as a nonlinear polymer waveguide layer. Periphery of the core layer 1 as a waveguide path is a clad layer 2 made of an electrically anisotropic material or non-linear material, which has an electrical and optical coefficient and optical anisotropy like the core layer 1 but of which refractive index is lower than that of the core. Direction of the polling electric field is arranged so that the mean θ=45 deg. in relation to the x-ray on a figure near the waveguide path, then, the non-linear molecules doped in the non-linear polymer core layer 1 are arranged in the electric field direction, and the macroscopic optical axes of the nonlinear polymer are formed at 45 deg. mean angle against the x-axis.
