    Abstract: 1,241,836. Anion-modified overbased carbonated amine-aldehyde condensates. LUBRIZOL CORP. 17 Sept., 1968, No. 44187/68. Heading C3R. [Also in Division C5] An overbased, carbonated complex of a metal of Group II of the Periodic Table with a condensate of a C 1-6 aliphatic aldehyde and an alkylene polyamine is modified by treatment with an acid or ammonium, amine or metal salt thereof or gas giving rise in water to an acid stronger than carbonic acid. The complex is known in the lubricating art and is prepared by reaction of a stoichiometric excess of a basic Group II metal compound with an aldehyde/ polyamine condensate, preferably in the presence of a phenolic promoter in an inert organic solvent, and treatment of the product with CO 2 . In Examples 1-7 complexes are prepared by heating aldehyde or formaldehyde with a mixture of N-octadecyl propylene diamine or N- dodecyl diethylene triamine or N-dodecyl butylene diamine and a mineral oil and water and Ca(OH) 2 , adding heptyl phenol and BaO or Ba(OH) 2 , then bubbling CO 2 through. In Examples I-X modified complexes are obtained by reaction of the products of Examples 2 or 4 with concentrated H 2 SO 4 or aqueous H 2 SO 4 , NaHSO 4 , (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , NH 4 HSO 4 , (NH 4 ) 6 Mo 7 O 24 - 4H 2 O, (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 , (NH 4 ) 2 CrO 4 , H 3 PO 4 , NH 4 H 2 O 4 , (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 , or NH 4 HB 4 O 7 . 3H 2 O, or gaseous SO 2 , solid H 2 NSO 3 H, O : O 1 -diheptylphenyl phosphorodithioate or aqueous ammonium alum. The products are added, with other conventional additives, to lubricating oils (compositions A-D).
