Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reconfiguring a communication system, in order to effect high quality communication. SOLUTION: In the communication system of the present invention, a transmitter is reconfigured based on the state of a mobile station, e.g. the functions and capacity of a mobile station receiver, the ratio of carrier vs interference waves or the signal/noise ratio and the mobility of the mobile station. Consequently, the arrangement of the transmitter is optimized to the state of a specific mobile station receiver. In one embodiment, the transmitter is selected to operate in single transmit antenna configuration, a space time configuration, selective transmit diversity configuration or multi-output multi-input configuration.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective method which controls data transmission with a communication channel for more detailed transmission by using the minimum band width. SOLUTION: A base station receives a message containing at least two sets of bits. A first set of bits is plural bits for designating a data rate. A second set of bits designates a transmission mode and contains at least one bit. A subset of possible transmission modes is discriminated on the basis of the data rate designated by the first set of bits. The second set of bits is used for selecting a transmission mode from the subset of transmission modes. Further, the base station transmits at least one bit to a mobile station and designates a data packet size.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently partitioning a code space even in a plurality of mode operation in a system, in which both a voice and a data user are supported. SOLUTION: The code space associated with a communication system is divided into at least two sub-spaces, and each sub-space is allocated to different operation modes in this case. In the first mode such as a voice mode, each user is given filter accesses to parts of the sub-spaces related to the operation modes. In the second mode such as a data mode, each user uses the whole sub-spaces associated with the modes on a time shared basis.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To disclose a method that uses transmission power information so as to decide a data rate thereby integrating a voice service and a data service on a same frequency channel in which the available transmission power information indicates an amount of transmission power available for future data transmission on one data channel or more. SOLUTION: A transmitter or a base station transmits an available power message denoting a quantity of available transmission power to a mobile phone for a prescribed future time via a forward link. The mobile phone performs signal-to-interference measurement corresponding to the received forward link and the received interference and decides a data rate supported by the mobile phone by using the signal to interference wave and the available power message. The decided data rate corresponds to a maximum data rate at which a minimum level of quality of service can be achieved at the mobile phone.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently distributing a code space in multiple mode operation. SOLUTION: Two codes are led out from the Walsh space of a Walsh 32 by using a code from the Walsh space of a Walsh 16. Likewise, two codes are generated from the space of a Walsh 64 by using each Walsh code from the space of the Walsh 32. Wx,y represents No.y Walsh code from the Walsh space of a Walsh (x). W32.1 and W64.3 cross at right angles, but W32.1 and W64.2 do not cross at right angles. In a system using a 128 symbol Walsh code, it is desirable that codes are assigned to sub-spaces in the group unit of the eight continuous codes and only 16 decoding paths are required because a receiver receives transmission.

Abstract: Data rate determination is provided in a system where the available power fraction and available Walsh codes in each active leg are dynamically changing over time. This method adapts the rate (modulation and coding) based on the combined resource (power & code space) levels seen at each cell. The method results in maximization of the rate supportable by each cell given their resource constrained situation while meeting the constraints of target packet or frame error rate and orthogonality. Furthermore, improved fast cell selection by the mobile results due to this approach that is based on knowledge of combined resource (power & code space) levels across the cells in the active set.

In a "distributed" embodiment, a transmitter or base station transmits. via a forward link, an available powe r message to a receiver or mobile-telephone indicating an amount of available transmit power at some future time t+z. The mobile-telephone performs signal-to-interference measurements corresponding to the received forward link and received interference, and uses such signal-to- interference measurements and the available power message to determine a data rate that c an be supported by the mobile-telephone. Preferably, the determined data rate corresponds to a maximum data rate at which a minimum level of quality of service can be achieved at the mobile- telephone. In a "centralized" embodiment, the mobile-telephone transmits the signal-to- interference measurements to the base station, and the base station determines the data rate based on the available transmit power at future time t+z.
