    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To vary a user data carrying speed by making it possible to use systems for mapping to several signal point arrangements and making each constitution capable of transmitting a different number of bits for each symbol. SOLUTION: A representative frame structure 201 used for a radio communication system for an operable beam has 64 time slots 203 in itself, i.e., has 203-1 to 203-64. Each time slot 203 has a data part(DP) 205 and a protection part (G) 207. Then the system for mapping to signal point arrangement can be changed basically by the time slots 203. Advantageously, the number of time slots used by a user is changed basically by the time slots and then the data carrying speed of the user can speedily be increased or decreased.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve channel quality by compensating a usable user data carrying speed which varies quickly, dynamically allocating time slots, and increasing and decreasing the number of time slots in use according to current data carrying speed conditions and the capacity of time slots which are so already allocated to meet the conditions. SOLUTION: A frame structure 201 has 64 time slots 203, i.e., time slots 203-1 to 203-64 inside. The time slots 203 have data part 205-1 to 205-64 and protection parts 207-1 to 207-64. The number of bits per symbol, i.e., the size of signal point arrangement used to map user data for transmission and the number of time slots allocated to a user per frame are represented as a function of channel quality and user conditions of a data carrying speed for specified service quality. The time slots in a frame are dynamically allocated to various users.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an effective method which controls data transmission with a communication channel for more detailed transmission by using the minimum band width. SOLUTION: A base station receives a message containing at least two sets of bits. A first set of bits is plural bits for designating a data rate. A second set of bits designates a transmission mode and contains at least one bit. A subset of possible transmission modes is discriminated on the basis of the data rate designated by the first set of bits. The second set of bits is used for selecting a transmission mode from the subset of transmission modes. Further, the base station transmits at least one bit to a mobile station and designates a data packet size.

    Abstract: In a TDMA system a multifunction control channel is employed that carries data used for implementing channel access functionality for users and is also employed at the remote terminals in the performance of modem functionality. In other words, information necessary to accurately receive data on the user traffic channels is obtainable by processing the multifunction control channel. This is achieved by arranging the broadband channel of the TDMA system as a repeating frame having time slots in which at least one time slot is reserved for use as the multifunction control channel, and the data that is transmitted on the multifunction control channel is encoded using a spread spectrum format. To this end the data carried on the multifunction control channel is encoded in a way that uses each symbol of the multifunction control channel as if it were a so-called spread spectrum "chip". At least one of the remaining time slots of the frame, and preferably all of the remaining time slots, which are typically used to carry user traffic arranged as logical channels, are not spread spectrum encoded. With regard to modem functionality, the remote terminals use the received multifunction control channel to a) perform frame synchronization, i.e., frame timing, b) perform frequency offset estimation, c) obtain an estimate of the channel impulse response, and d) estimate the received signal strength for use in gain control.
