Abstract: A method for driving a plasma display panel comprising a plurality of first electrodes disposed in parallel with each other, a plurality of second electrodes disposed in parallel with each other and perpendicular to the first electrodes, the second electrodes having a plurality of blocks, and a driving means to apply pulses to the second electrodes, wherein the different electrodes belonging to the different blocks are successively scanned in the predetermined order. Alternatively, the different electrodes may be scanned by repeating applications of pulse to a second electrode belonging to a certain block and to a second electrode belonging to either of the adjacent blocks.

Abstract: A method for driving a gas discharge display panel consists of the steps of applying a writing pulse on a specific display electrode line selected from display electrode lines arranged side by side in the panel, applying a scanning pulse on a specific scanning electrode line selected from scanning electrode lines which are arranged side by side and cross the display electrode lines to produce writing gas discharge in cooperation with the writing pulse in a specific discharge cell arranged at an intersection space between the specific display electrode and the specific scanning electrode line, and applying a series of maintaining pulses subsequent to the scanning pulse on the specific scanning electrode during only a maintaining period to produce maintaining gas discharge subsequent to the writing gas discharge in the specific discharge cell, the maintaining gas discharge being intermittently produced in synchronism with the maintaining pulses. The scanning pulse is applied in synchronism with the writing pulse. The maintaining gas discharge is stopped without applying any pulse after the maintaining period passes.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a direct-current type gas discharge display device having a high rate of aperture and enabling stable discharge to be effected therein, by adopting the anode configuration permitting a reduction in the discharge start voltage. CONSTITUTION:The area of a projected anode 11 portion onto a cathode is made to occupy 20% to 50% inclusive, of the total area of the cathode 3. The portion of the anode 11 other than the mentioned anode 11 portion is made as thin as possible to ensure a sufficient rate of opening. The discharge-starting voltage depends upon the uniformity of the potential prevailing between the cathode 3 and the anode 11. Since, therefore, it is possible to make uniform the potential distribution by making the area of the opposition portion between the cathode 3 and the anode 11 a specified value or a greater value than it, through enlarging of the projected anode 11 area on the cathode 3 it is possible to decrease the discharge-starting voltage to obtain a high quality of display based on a reliable discharge ignition.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the gas discharge type display device which is improved in directivity and with which high brightness is obtainable. CONSTITUTION:Lenses 7 and anodes 6 are installed on a front glass plate 1 and cathodes 5 are provided on a rear glass plate 2. The front glass plate 1 and the back glass plate 2 are held to face each other by insulators 3 and discharge spaces 4 are formed therebetween. The light emitted in the discharge spaces 4 and diffused in all directions is eventually condensed to one direction before the light is passed through the front glass 1 by the effect of the lenses 7. Then, the light concentrates in an observation direction and, therefore, the high brightness is obtd. even if the display device is formed with the higher finenes.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of crosstalk even when a picture element is densified by enclosing each display cell with bulkhead and whereby separating each cell from adjacent cell, and by providing a third electrode comprising an insulated conductive layer, on the back surface of a cathode. CONSTITUTION:A front glass sheet 13 and a back surface plate 11 are opposed with each other through a bulkhead 20 at a predetermined interval, and an anode 14 comprising transparent conductor is provided on the front glass sheet 13 and a cathode 12 on the back surface plate 11, while a conductive layer 22 insulated from the cathode 12 by a dielectric layer 21, is applied as a third electrode between the cathode 12 and the back surface plate 11. A display cell 23 is formed which is separated from adjacent cell, on the cross point between the cathode 12 and the anode 14. Each cell 23 will thus be an optically independent space, and a priming effect that facilitates the starting of discharging is obtained by preliminarily discharging between the cathode 12 and the third electrode 22 on the back surface. Even when the display cell is demsified, crosstalk hardly occurs, and stable discharge that is not dependent upon display condition is thus obtained constantly.

On its surface a fluorescent substance 9 is formed, and a front plate 1 where a group of cathode wires 2 are installed, is arranged as confronting the back plate 3 while a bulkhead 5 is interposed in between.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a high-quality display by using an anode bus made of a transparent conducting film printed and formed with a thick film and anode auxiliary lines made of a metal printed and formed with a thick film as anode lines, and connecting them. CONSTITUTION:When a positive voltage with respect to a cathode line 3 is applied to an anode line 11, a discharge cell 6 at the intersection is discharged and illuminated. A metal line 7 is formed on a front plate 2 by the thick film printing method, and an indium oxide ITO film 8 is formed on it by the thick film printing method as the anode line 11. When only the ITO film 8 is used for the anode lines 11, currents flowing on individual discharge cells are made nonuniform to cause intensity irregularities because the ITO film 8 has high resistance. The ITO film 8 and the metal lines 7 are connected together over the whole length to prevent this problem, and the currents flow on the metal lines 7. The discharge start voltage is reduced, and a stable display can be attained by the sure ignition of an electric discharge.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a DC gas discharge display device with a longer life than in the past by solving a problematical point such as early decrease of brightness, and miniaturizing a peripheral circuit. CONSTITUTION:Cathode and anode groups 2, 5 arranged in a matrix shape are arranged on wall surfaces of dielectric partitions 3 so as to be parallelly discharged to a display surface. The cathode and anode groups 2, 5 are insulated by the dielectric partition 3 and a dielectric layer 4. A fluorescent material 6 is arranged on a glass plate 7 so as to be placed distant from a discharge. By this constitution, since a distance is provided between the actual discharge space and the fluorescent material 6, decrease of brightness by sputter of a cathode can be suppressed. In a driving system of a pulse memory circuit, by ionizing the discharge space by a maintenance pulse between the cathode and anode, the third electrode and an exclusive use circuit for an assist discharge are not required. As a result, a pulse memory system DC gas discharge display device in small size with a longer life than the conventional can be provided.
