    Abstract: PURPOSE: To safely obtain the subject compound at low cost, useful as a reactive reagent when introducing an optically active center, by using oxygen molecules as oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula IV (* denotes an optically active center) is obtained by reaction of (A) a sulfide of formula I (R and R are each an alkyl, alicyclic hydrocarbon or aryl) (e.g. cyclopentylmethyl sulfide) with oxygen molecules in the presence of (B) an aldehyde of formula II (R -R are each H or an alkyl) (e.g. pivalaldehyde) using an optically active manganese (III) complex catalyst of formula III (R and R are each H, an alkyl or aryl; R is an alkyl, aryl or alkoxyl; R is an alkyl or aryl; X is an anion). It is preferable, for example, that the amounts of the components B and C to be used per mol of the component A be 3-8 moles and 5-20 moles, respectively.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain quinones in a high yield under mild reaction conditions using molecular oxygen as an easy-to-handle and safe oxidizing agent by carrying out the reaction between a naphthalene derivative and oxygen molecules in the presence of a specific complex and an aldehyde. CONSTITUTION:The compound is obtained by carrying out the reaction of a naphthalene derivative of the formula I (R -R are H, straight or branched alkyl or aryl) with molecular oxygen in the presence of a canadium (IV) complex of the formula II (R -R are H, aryl, halogen) and an aldehyde of the formula: R CHO (R is a straight or branched alkyl, an aryl or an alkenyl) such as crotonaldehyde. The reaction is preferably carried out in a solvent such as acetone at -30 to +50 deg.C. In another case, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a peroxide such as peracetic acid and the vanadium (IV) complex to attain the practical reaction rate recommendably.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a glycerol derivative useful for an intermediate for medicines and agricultural chemicals and a raw material for polymers in high yield without damaging an ester group from an epoxy group-containing compound by a new reaction using a nickel compound with a specific structure as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An epoxy group-containing compound (e.g. 2,3-epoxy-3- methylbutyl benzoate) of formula I (R to R are H, alkyl or aryl and R and R as well as R and R form a ring; R is alkyl or aryl; (n) is 1 or 2) is reacted with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a nickel compound ([e.g. bis(3-methyl-2,4-pentanedionato)nickel] of formula II (R to R are H, alkyl or aryl) as a catalyst to give a glycerol derivative of formula III or formula IV. Further, the reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an aldehyde compound of formula V (R'' is alkyl, alkenyl or aryl) or a carbonyl-containing compound of formula VI or formula VII (R to R are alkyl). Further, the reaction is done preferably in the presence of a synthetic zeolite compound.

The above-mentioned compounds are preferably used in amounts based on 1mol compound expressed by formula I as follows. 0.0096-4mol% compound expressed by formula II, etc., and 1-10mol% aldehyde compound.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To industrially and safely produce a carboxylic acid under a mild reactional condition at a low cost by a novel reaction by using an aldehyde compound as a raw material in the coexistence of a nickel compound and oxygen gas. CONSTITUTION:An aldehyde compound of formula I (R is alkyl, aryl) (e.g. octyl aldehyde) is reacted with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a nickel compound of formula II (R , R , R , R are alkyl, aryl, etc.; R , R are H, halogen, alkyl, etc.,) (e.g. a compound of formula III) to obtain a carboxylic acid of formula IV (e.g. octanoic acid). The nickel compound of formula II can be obtained by a desalting method using a diketene corresponding to a desired nickel compound and NiSO4, NiCl2, etc. The method does not use strongly toxic reagents, explosive reagents and further expensive reagents. The amount of the Ni compound used may be reduced.
