Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a copolyester having an optical anisotropy and improved melt flowability, heat resistance, and mechanical properties by specifying the m.p. and logarithmic viscosity of the copolyester. CONSTITUTION:p-Hydroxybenzoic acid (A), ethylene glycol (B), and an arom. dicarboxylic acid (C) are copolymerized in a molar ratio of component A to components A and B of 60-95%, thus giving a copolyester which comprises structural units of formulae I, II, and III (wherein R1 represents at least one member selected from groups of formulae IV to IX; X is H or Cl; and the amt. of units of formula II is equimolar to that of formula III) and which has an m.p. (Tm, deg.C) satisfying formula X [wherein x is the ratio (mol%) of formula II to formulae I and II], a logarithmic viscosity in the melting range of 30 deg.C or narrower (measured by differential calorimetry) of 0.4-3.0dl/g, and a difference between the flowing start temp. and the melting completion temp. (obtd. from the temp. dependence curve of the complex viscosity) of 25 deg.C or lower.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject molded product of low linear expansion coefficient, excellent in mechanical properties and heat resistance, useful for electrical and electronic parts, etc., by e.g. injection molding, under specified conditions, of a blend of a thermoplastic resin with a liquid crystalline resin capable of forming anisotropic molten phase at specified proportion. CONSTITUTION:In a blend of (A) 99-50wt.% of a thermoplastic resin such as polyester and (B) 1-50wt.% of a liquid crystalline resin capable of forming anisotropic molten phase (e.g. a copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and polyethylene terephthalate), the blending ratio of the components A to B is so defined that the shear rate-dependent curve for the melt viscosity of the component B at a molding temperature ensured to cross over such curve for the component A determined at the same temperature within the range of a shear rate of 10-2000/sec, and such a blend is kneaded in a molten state at a temperature not lower than the liquid crystal initiation temperature for the component B and put to injection molding or extrusion at a temperature not lower than the liquid crystal initiation temperature, thus obtaining the objective molded product.

(Tm, deg.C) satisfying formula VII, a logarithmic viscosity in the melting range of 30 deg.C or narrower (measured by differential calorimetry) of 1.0-3.0dl/g, and a difference between the flowing start temp. and the melting completion temp. (obtd. from the temp. dependence curve of the complex viscosity) of 25 deg.C or lower.
