Abstract: Disclosed is a method for producing polyesters by polymerizing terephthalic acid and/or its ester-forming derivative, and a glycol and/or its ester-forming derivative in a plant comprising an esterification device and a polycondensation device in series, while partly or wholly recycling the distillate from the esterification device and/or the polycondensation device that consists essentially of a glycol and/or its ester-forming derivative. The method comprises a step of continuously or intermittently measuring the content of at least one of water, the glycol and its ester-forming derivative in the distillate to be recycled, determining the amounts of the raw materials to be fed to the intended reaction device, on the basis of the data thus measured, and feeding the thus-determined amounts of the raw materials to the reaction device; or comprises a step of storing the distillate, prior to being recycled for the starting material, in a storing tank that has a capacity corresponding to the amount of the glycol and/or its esterforming derivative to be fed to the esterification device for a period of 10 hours or more.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent pellets from fusing to each other at the drying process before forming by a method wherein rod-like melt polymer, which is discharged from a mouthpiece and mainly made of polyester, is cooled in open air for the specified period of time and then brought into contact with cooling water so as to be solidified. CONSTITUTION:Rod-like melt polyester polymer 6 discharged from a mouthpiece 8 is held for 0.10-0.5sec at a cooling water contacting part 2 until being immersed in cooling water 9 as air cooling time. If the air cooling time is shorter than 0.10sec, fusion may be promoted in drying process before forming. Or, if the air cooling time is longer than 0.5sec, due to the relative shaking between the rod-like polymers discharged from small holes or the like, fusion may occur during air cooling or water cooling, resulting in realizing fused pellets after being out. The reason why the above- mentioned air cooling time is selected is the development to the order of the crystallization, under which fusion can be prevented, of the surface layer, the temperature of which is lower than the melting point of polyester and, at the same time, which is slowly cooled down near its melting pont, of the discharged molten polymer having the temperature exceeding the melting point of the polyester.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To dissolve a trouble due to clogging at the beginning of ester exchange reaction, by reacting a lower alkyl ester of a discarboxylic acid and glycol, with the inside of a fractionating tower-being wetted with a lower alcohol or glycol. CONSTITUTION:In the ester exchange reaction, in which a lower alkyl ester of a discarboxylic acid is batchwise reacted with glycol, the inside of a fractionating tower is preliminarily wetted with a lower alcohol and/or glycol, before the reaction. The lower alcohol is primarily methyl alcohol, which may be partially replaced by a lower alcohol such as methyl or butyl alcohol. The inside of the refractionating tower is wetted, for instance, by injecting said liquids at the top, into the refluxing circuit or at the middle, of the fractionating tower, by means of a pump.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the vacuum circuit of a condensation polymerization system from being clogged and to prevent the glycol distilled from escaping out of the system, by the batchwise condensation polymerization of a glycol ester of a discorboxylic acid in a reaction system, reduced in pressure at a specified rate. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of a polyester by the batchwise condensation polymerization of a glycol ester of a discarboxylic acid, the reaction system is reduced in pressure from 760-100mm.Hg in 10-25min, and from 100-10mm.Hg in 5-15min. Said method, being applicable either to ester exchange or to direct polymerization, is more effective for the direct polymerization, in which a vacuum circuit is markedly clogged in the polymerization system. In the condensation polymerization of a glycol ester obtained by esterification or a low polymer thereof, it is preferable to use one, in which a ratio of a terephthalic acid group to a terminal hydroxy group is about 1:0.1-1:2.0.
