    Abstract: Disclosed is a fiber obtained by at least partially fibrillating or splitting a composite fiber having an islands-in-sea construction comprising a plurality of island components which are separated from and parallel to each other in the axial direction of the composite fiber and are surrounded by a sea component, wherein the sea component is made of an ion exchange resin and the island components are made of a reinforcing polymer which is not an ion exchanger. Also disclosed is a sheet composed of such a fiber. The fibrous resin is particularly useful in tobacco filters which may selectively reduce ionic, polar and mutagenic components as well as tar and nicotine in tobacco smoke.

    Abstract: The present invention is a filter for tobacco smoke containing a fibrous ion exchange resin, and also a fibrous ion exchange resin useful for making such a filter in which at least a part of the fiber is fibrillated or split. Using the filter of the invention makes it possible to remove very efficiently from tobacco smoke substances harmful to the human body, such as ionic substances, polar substances, carcinogenic substances, mutagenic substances, as well as nicotine and tar.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To make a membrane separation apparatus without lowering liquid permeability practically and carry out membrane separation at high efficiency by using a hydrophilic.hydrophobic separation unit membrane having hydrophilic parts and hydrophobic parts and lowering gas adhesion to membrane surface. CONSTITUTION:A hydrophilic.hydrophobic separation unit membrane 1 is composed of hydrophilic parts 6 and hydrophobic parts 5. The ratio of hydrophilic part 6 to the hydrophobic parts 5 in the membrane 1 is preferably 1-9% as membrane surface area from a viewpoint of degassing efficiency. Also, the base materials for the parts 5, 6 (e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene) of the membrane 1 are preferably the same material each other. Further, a hollow yarn membrane is preferable from a viewpoint of size of the apparatus and cost. By using the membrane 1, gas adhesion to the membrane surface is lowered and a membrane separation apparatus without lowering liquid permeability practically is obtained and membrane separation can be carried out at high efficiency.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain easily and economically the title fiber which is suitable for use in air and liquid filters, has excellent strength, ion exchange rate (adsorptivity) and heat resistance and is of high quality, by treating a specified fibrous molding with gaseous sulfuric anhydride. CONSTITUTION:A fibrous molding (A) having a fineness of 0.1-500de (e.g., multi-core sea-island type), mainly composed of a major proportion of a poly (arom. monovinyl compd.) composed of a (co)polymer of (alpha-methyl)styrene, vinyltoluene, vinylnaphthalene, p-chlorostyrene, etc., a graft copolymer thereof or a blend thereof and a minor proportion of a reinforcing polymer (e.g., a polyester, a polyamide, a poly-alpha-olefin) is sulfonated and simultaneously crosslinked in an atmosphere contg. 0.1-90% gaseous sulfuric anhydride (B) to obtain the title fiber having an introduced sulfo group content of 0.1-10meq/g of dry molding and a degree of hydration of 0.1-10 which is a measure of a degree of crosslinking.
