    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thick coating which can be used for a brush seal, has a long life and is free from crack. SOLUTION: This coating for a brush seal, in which a brush bristle is formed with a super alloy, has a nickel - chromium matrix which has a standard particle size of abut 44-15μm and contains a hard carbide phase of about 40-60vol% essentially made of a chromium carbide, and the nickel - chromium matrix contains, by nominal composition, about 80% Cr and about 20% Ni. The chromium carbide phase preferably and further contains either one of a titanium carbide, a tungsten carbide, a vanadium carbide and an optional mixture thereof.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the compsn. of grindable coating to be subjected to a substrate in a gas turbine engine. SOLUTION: The grindable coating is formed by plasma-spraying a top coat on a bond coat medium. The grindable coating contains 11 to 14 wt.% yttria, and the balance substantial zirconia. By this compsn., the corrosion resistance of the coating can be improved, and further, its thermal conductivity is made low, and by using this coating, the efficiency of the engine and its ductility can be improved.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an abrasive end portion for a seal mechanism of a gas turbine engine that receives a high degree of wear which is more durable, and the production of which is less expensive. SOLUTION: An abrasive end portion 28 includes a zirconium oxide wear coating 44 which is harder than a abraded seal surface such that it is able to grind the abraded seal surface, and which directly covers the top which has substantially no macrogrit. The coating 44 has a pillar-like structure and contains a stabilizer of approximately 3 wt.% to approximately 25 wt.%. The stabilizer may be selected from yttrium oxide, magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, or a mixture of these materials.

    Abstract: A turbine engine component is provided which has a substrate and a thermal barrier coating applied over the substrate. The thermal barrier coating comprises alternating layers of yttria- stabilized zirconia and a molten silicate resistant material. The molten silicate resistant outer layer may be formed from at least one oxide of a material selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, scandium, indium, zirconium, hafnium, and titanium or may be formed from a gadolinia-stabilized zirconia. If desired, a metallic bond coat may be present between the substrate and the thermal barrier coating system. A method for forming the thermal barrier coating system of the present invention is described.
